Kingdom Hearts fans have more than one major project to watch. An animated series is reportedly in development and appears set to cover events from Kingdom Hearts Union x Dark Road. Meanwhile, Kingdom Hearts 4 remains scheduled for release in late 2027.
That wording has led some fans to wonder whether “late 2027” could eventually move into early 2028 or even later. At the Kingdom Hearts panel at this weekend’s D23 event, co-directors Tetsuya Nomura and Tai Yasue addressed those concerns directly.
“I saw online that some people were saying the release date might still get pushed back. I want to set the record straight: That is not happening,” Nomura said via IGN.
Why fans are cautious about the schedule
The concern is understandable. The series has previously gone through lengthy gaps between its numbered releases: Kingdom Hearts 3 arrived 14 years after Kingdom Hearts 2. A late-2027 launch would represent an eight-year gap between Kingdom Hearts 3 and Kingdom Hearts 4, which is shorter but still substantial.
Square Enix also has several large projects listed for 2027, creating a busy release calendar:
- The next Final Fantasy XIV expansion, Evercold, is scheduled for January 2027.
- Final Fantasy Revelation is expected to launch in spring 2027.
- Kingdom Hearts 4 is planned for late 2027.
Those games are being developed by different teams, but they would still make for an unusually significant year of releases for Square Enix. If projects share development resources, the workload could create an opportunity for schedules to change. That is why the comments from the Kingdom Hearts 4 leadership matter.
Yasue calls the 2027 launch certain
Yasue expressed confidence in Square Enix’s ability to manage its overlapping projects during the D23 panel.
“I can confidently say and promise that it will launch in 2027,” Yasue said. “It’s not like an 80-percent, 90-percent—it’s a 100-percent thing. We’ll be there in 2027 for sure.”
For now, the announced window remains late 2027, rather than a more precise day or month. Until more details arrive, fans can follow further arcade and gaming news, explore arcade machines, or use RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide while they wait.
