PS6: the current picture

The PlayStation 5 will reach its sixth birthday in 2026, placing it near the point when discussion about a successor normally gathers pace. Seven years is a typical lifespan for a home-console generation, and no PlayStation has taken longer than seven years to follow its predecessor. The eight-year gaps between Switch and Switch 2, and Xbox 360 and Xbox One, remain the longest for major home consoles, although the Game Boy lasted an extraordinary 12 years.

Longer game-development cycles, early PS5 supply problems and the pandemic have all made the current generation feel slower than expected. Even so, Sony is expected to be planning its next machine. While you browse the latest arcade news and gaming coverage, here is the state of play as at 17 August 2026.

Latest PS6 news

Sony president and chief executive Hiroki Totoki told the Wall Street Journal on 14 August that the company has not finalised a PlayStation 6 release date. In May, he also told investors that Sony had yet to settle the console’s launch date or price and was considering whether to change its business model.

The uncertainty is linked partly to shortages and rising prices for computer-memory chips, driven by demand from artificial-intelligence companies. Totoki said Sony needed to take action to survive that market. Reports indicate that the console may have moved from a possible 2027 launch to 2028 or later.

When will PS6 launch?

There is no confirmed release date. A November 2027 launch had appeared plausible because the PS3, PS4 and PS5 all followed a similar November release pattern. However, memory shortages have altered that outlook, with 2028 and 2029 now reported as possible windows.

Why could the console be delayed?

Securing enough memory at a price consumers will accept is only one consideration. The PS5 has sold at a rate broadly comparable with the PS4, but the dedicated home-console market appears to be contracting. Current-generation adoption has also been gradual, while Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft remain widely playable on older systems.

Development times have expanded, leaving current hardware feeling underused. Grand Theft Auto 6, expected to become one of the PS5’s defining releases, has not yet arrived. At the same time, improvements in hardware are producing smaller visible gains while development costs continue to grow. These factors may reduce demand for a new generation. A 2027 launch has even been described as potentially disastrous for everyone involved.

How much might PS6 cost?

No reliable Australian or international price can be forecast yet. Memory costs, inflation and wider economic conditions are changing quickly, making predictions for a console that may not arrive until 2028 or beyond especially uncertain.

The machine could cost more than earlier PlayStation consoles. Previous systems commonly became cheaper during their lifespans, but the PS5 now costs more than it did at launch, while the PS5 Pro launched at US$750. Analysts suggested a US$600 starting price for PS6 in 2024, although that estimate would likely need to rise under current conditions. Sony’s comments about changing its business model show that pricing is already a serious concern.

Which games could PS6 receive?

It is too early to identify a confirmed launch line-up. Projects intended for the next generation are likely already being developed, but studios can keep several platform options open while Sony’s timing remains unsettled.

A leaked Insomniac roadmap listed proposed dates of 2028 for Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and 2030 for Marvel’s X-Men. Those plans are unconfirmed: a proposed 2025 Venom game did not materialise, while Marvel’s Wolverine remains associated with a 2026 release. If Spider-Man 3 stays on a 2028 schedule, it could be delayed, released on PS5, or launched across both generations.

Marvel’s X-Men is a safer candidate for PS6, although its platform has not been officially confirmed. Other possibilities include Gran Turismo 8, another Astro Bot game, an unannounced Naughty Dog project that is not believed to be The Last of Us Part 3, and Santa Monica Studio’s next title. Each could target PS5, PS6 or both. Grand Theft Auto 7 is even further away; given the time required to make GTA 6, it may be more realistic to expect it on PS7 or PS8.

Will PS6 play older games?

Backward compatibility with PS5 games appears highly likely, and PS4 support is also probable. Sony is continuing to work with AMD on processors for future hardware, and reports point to a next-generation Zen processor using the x86 architecture already used by PS4 and PS5.

That shared foundation should make compatibility easier to implement. It also matches player expectations: the PS5 benefited considerably from being able to play PS4 games, particularly during a generation when major software took longer to produce. What could the PS6 hardware do?

Several specifications have circulated, but none is sufficiently established to treat as official. AMD is the only confirmed silicon partner. Reports and expectations point towards a custom AMD processor based on next-generation Zen technology and an RDNA 5 graphics unit.

Claims of up to 30 GB of GDDR7 memory remain unsupported. The broader performance target discussed for the system is 4K gaming at 120 frames per second with advanced ray tracing, although that would not mean every game could deliver those settings. What about a new PlayStation handheld?

Sony is also widely reported to be developing a handheld aimed at competing with Switch 2, Steam Deck, Xbox Ally and other PC-based handhelds. Full PS4 compatibility appears likely, while reports suggest that PS5 games could run on the device, although not necessarily every title or at PS5-level quality.

Some PS6 compatibility is possible if the handheld uses cut-down versions of the same Zen and RDNA architecture reportedly planned for the console. Increasing overlap between hardware generations, together with the need for third-party games to support PC and multiple console platforms, could help the handheld remain compatible with newer releases for longer. What we can say with confidence

  • Sony has not confirmed a PS6 release date or price.
  • Memory-chip shortages and broader hardware costs are affecting the launch outlook.
  • 2028 or 2029 are reported possibilities, but neither date is official.
  • AMD is expected to remain involved in the system’s processor technology.
  • PS4 and PS5 backward compatibility is likely, but still awaits confirmation.
  • Game plans, detailed specifications and handheld compatibility remain unconfirmed.

Until Sony provides firm details, the most responsible forecast is a powerful AMD-based successor with broad library support, a potentially premium price and a launch no earlier than the once-expected 2027 window.
