Bethesda Game Studios has urged players of Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim to prepare for upcoming updates by launching their games and backing up their saves and mod load orders.

The warning matters most to PC players who rely on third-party mods. Even a relatively small game update can disrupt installed modifications, create compatibility problems or prevent a carefully configured load order from working correctly.

What Bethesda has asked players to do

Bethesda’s advice is straightforward: open the game save you use, particularly if it has been a while since you last played, then manually save your load order. The studio says this will allow players to download their complete Creations list in one go after the update arrives.

Bethesda said on social media that the precaution should be taken before the updates go live.

Fallout 4 update arrives first

Fallout 4 is scheduled to receive its update on Tuesday, 18 August. Bethesda has described the patch as bringing “general improvements” to Creations, but the practical effect on third-party mods could be much more significant than that wording suggests.

Mod authors cannot begin fixing compatibility issues until the update has been released. Some creators will work quickly to restore their projects, while abandoned mods may never receive another update. That has already prompted mod creators to brace for an onslaught of support requests.

Skyrim’s update has no firm date

Bethesda has not provided a specific release date for the Skyrim update, saying only that it is coming soon. The same disruption risk applies when that patch arrives, especially for players using extensive mod collections.

The timing is significant because both games remain heavily played. A recent Skyrim graphics mod has attracted attention for improving the game’s visuals without requiring powerful processing hardware. On a Monday afternoon during working hours, more than 34,000 people were playing Skyrim on Steam alone.

For many PC players, mod support is a central reason to return to Bethesda’s role-playing games. An update can therefore mean downloading dozens of mod patches before a familiar setup works normally again.

How PC players can reduce the disruption

Backing up saves and recording a working load order are the safest immediate steps. Players are also advising each other to switch off automatic updates on Steam, then wait until essential mods have been tested with the new game version.

  • Launch the relevant game before the update is installed.
  • Load the save and manually record or save the current load order.
  • Keep a backup of important save files.
  • Consider disabling Steam’s automatic updates temporarily.
  • Check whether essential mods have been updated before returning to the game.

A familiar headache for mod users

This is not expected to be catastrophic, and Bethesda has issued similar update warnings before. However, the combination of a large modding community, two games that remain in regular rotation and an uncertain Skyrim release date makes preparation worthwhile.

For now, the most important deadline is the Fallout 4 update on 18 August. Skyrim players have more time, but Bethesda’s recommendation applies to them as well: open the game, protect the save and preserve the load order before the next patch arrives.
