Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man imagines Devils as supernatural manifestations of human fear. Denji’s miserable life changes when he forms a contract with Pochita, the dog-like Chainsaw Devil.
After zombies kill Denji, Pochita replaces his heart, creating a human-Devil hybrid. Denji joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters in exchange for the possibility of a more dignified life, but his Chainsaw heart quickly attracts Devils and factions that want to control or destroy him.
In this world, a Devil’s strength corresponds to the fear surrounding the idea it represents. Abstract terrors such as darkness and eternity can therefore take physical form. Some Devils become allies, including the Blood Devil, better known as Power. Others follow separate agendas: Reze, one of Denji’s early love interests, is secretly the Bomb Devil and has been tasked with eliminating him.

5. Control Devil — Makima
Makima’s apparent kindness towards Denji feels calculated well before her true identity is exposed. She uses his need for companionship to make him dependent on her approval, creating an oppressive relationship built on a severe imbalance of power.
As the Control Devil, Makima can manipulate and “brainwash” living beings. A government contract further protects her by transferring damage inflicted on her to random citizens. Her menace comes from more than physical strength: her clinical, systematic approach to domination resembles bureaucratic evil.
Makima intends to use the Chainsaw Devil to erase war, death and hunger. The ambition may sound utopian, but her lack of empathy makes mass suffering an acceptable price. Her inability to form equal, reciprocal relationships is closely tied to her desire to remove everyone else’s independence.
4. Falling Devil — a Primal Fear
The Falling Devil embodies both the instinctive terror of dropping from a height and the emotional descent associated with depression. It becomes the principal antagonist of the Academy Saga, where Asa Mitaka, host of the War Devil Yoru, pursues Denji at school.
Its first major act on Earth is to influence humans to take their own lives. It can also revive traumatic memories and propel victims towards the gates of Hell. Near-absolute immortality and immense regeneration make it difficult to fight, while its psychic attacks exploit guilt, insecurity and painful memories.
The Falling Devil can manipulate gravity, distort physical laws and cause widespread natural disasters. Denji and Yoru eventually help subdue it, but it remains powerful enough to destroy the Justice Devil with one beam of energy.
3. Gun Devil
The Gun Devil transforms fear of firearms into a vision of global, impersonal slaughter. It offers no comprehensible ideology and does not engage in meaningful dialogue; its apparent purpose is simply catastrophic destruction without regard for human life.
In five minutes, the Gun Devil kills 1.2 million people, including children. The event has the scale of a natural disaster, yet its connection to deliberate weaponised violence makes it especially horrifying. Fragments of the Devil are also coveted by global superpowers pursuing their own schemes.
Its body takes different weapon-like forms. When it possesses Aki Hayakawa, the barrel and slide of an M1911 jut from its face. When the President of the United States summons 20 per cent of its body, M4 Carbines and other weapons make up its arms. These forms intensify the panic surrounding the Devil.
2. Darkness Devil — a Primal Fear
The Darkness Devil represents the fear of what cannot be seen, known or understood. Its cosmic, Lovecraftian presence suggests a force far beyond human reasoning, making conventional battle tactics almost meaningless.
It can manipulate objects with a gesture, sever limbs and destroy a living being by speaking a single word. Makima is able to damage it, but the Darkness Devil retaliates with a Blade of Darkness that causes violent haemorrhaging.
Absolute regeneration lets it recover instantly from severe wounds. Together with its incomprehensible form and god-like abilities, this makes the Darkness Devil appear virtually impossible to kill through ordinary means.
1. Chainsaw Devil — Pochita
Pochita is the world’s most unpredictable wild card because the Chainsaw Devil threatens Devils themselves. Many of the manga’s central conflicts revolve around attempts to capture, exploit or eliminate the entity living within Denji.
By consuming a Devil, the Chainsaw Devil can permanently erase that Devil from human history. This is more than physical destruction: concepts, objects and events can disappear from reality as though they had never existed. Pochita once erased the concept of nuclear weapons after consuming the Nuclear Weapons Devil.
The ability appears to have limits. Nuclear weapons were later recreated because the radioactive components and armaments needed to produce them remained in the world. Nevertheless, Pochita’s combat ability and reality-altering power are enough to overturn the existing order.
The manga’s much-debated ending gives this power a personal purpose. Pochita erases the concept of Chainsaw Man to save Denji from an endless cycle of suffering, producing a soft reset of the timeline. The resolution links overwhelming power with the story’s preference for ordinary emotional bonds over unchecked chaos.
Why these Devils are so frightening
Each Devil represents a different vulnerability: manipulation, despair, mass violence, the unknown and the possibility of rewriting reality itself. That variety makes the threats in Chainsaw Man more than conventional monsters.
