Spider-Man: Brand New Day has joined a select group of blockbuster films after earning more than $2 billion worldwide in fewer than three weeks.

The Marvel and Sony release is now the second-fastest film to reach that figure, behind Avengers: Endgame. It is also only the eighth movie in history to pass the $2 billion mark.

Brand New Day’s global box-office result

Since its 31 July premiere, Brand New Day has taken $785 million in the United States and $1.236 billion from international markets. The film reached $1 billion just six days after opening. Current figures are listed by Box Office Mojo.

Its $2 billion result places the latest live-action Spider-Man adventure alongside James Cameron’s Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Ne Zha 2, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Titanic.

Avatar remains the biggest earner among those films, with a worldwide total of $2.9 billion.

How it compares with No Way Home

The previous Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, finished its theatrical run with $1.9 billion in 2019. It was not released in China, a market that may have helped it clear the $2 billion threshold.

Brand New Day also opened strongly in the United States, collecting $360 million during its first weekend. That was the largest domestic opening weekend ever. Its $927 million global opening ranks second all-time, behind Avengers: Endgame and its $1.22 billion global debut.

An IMAX release provided an additional lift during the film’s second week, and the movie has continued to set records during its theatrical run.

A strong year for the domestic box office

The performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Toy Story 5 has put the United States domestic box office on course to exceed $10 billion for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The result is an important win for Disney after weaker performances from films including the live-action Moana remake and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Could Spider-Man challenge the domestic record?

Brand New Day is currently the fourth-highest-grossing film ever in the United States, positioned just behind No Way Home. Its pace suggests it should pass that predecessor quickly, and it could eventually overtake the domestic total of Avengers: Endgame before leaving cinemas.

The top spot remains some distance away. Star Wars: The Force Awakens currently holds the United States record with $936 million.
