Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is getting a new chapter
Fans of Epic Mickey received an unexpected update at D23: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit will headline a new three-part miniseries on Disney+. Jon Favreau announced the project during Friday’s flagship showcase, with a premiere scheduled for 17 February 2027.
From Disney’s first star to forgotten character
Walt Disney created Oswald before Mickey Mouse, but did not retain ownership of the character. Oswald was eventually abandoned and slipped into obscurity, while Mickey became Disney’s leading character because the company owned him outright.
Disney regained the rights to Oswald in 2006 through a deal with NBCUniversal. The arrangement involved trading ESPN sportscaster Al Michaels to NBC’s sports programming team. Disney’s interest in bringing Oswald back became clearer several years later when the character took a central role in Epic Mickey.
Why Oswald matters to Epic Mickey fans
The original Epic Mickey was a Wii adventure in which Mickey explored worlds populated by obscure and forgotten Disney characters. Oswald was a major part of that story, and later returned in the sequel and the 2024 remaster, Epic Mickey Rebrushed.
Outside the game series, Oswald has generally appeared only in occasional cameos or brief references in other Disney Animation projects. The new miniseries gives him a much larger role and places the character at the centre of his own story.

What the Oswald miniseries is about
The series, titled Oswald, will combine live action and animation in a format compared with Coyote vs. Acme. The story begins when Oswald escapes into the real world after an earthquake. He then meets a group of middle-school students, who help him navigate a world he has not seen for 100 years.
Cast and creative team
Jon Favreau wrote, co-directed and produced the miniseries. He is known for directing the first two Iron Man films, Elf and The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Kathryn Hahn is the best-known confirmed cast member. The announced cast also includes Ryder Allen, Albert Brooks, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris and Al Madrigal.
Epic Mickey Rebrushed is still expanding
Oswald will premiere on Disney+ almost 100 years after Oswald first appeared in the animated short Trolley Troubles. Before then, Epic Mickey Rebrushed is scheduled to arrive on iOS and Android on 16 September, followed by Nintendo Switch 2 on 6 October.
