Kingdom Hearts 4 received its most detailed presentation yet at the franchise’s D23 panel, including a four-minute extended trailer, developer discussion and the first substantial look at Mickey Mouse gameplay.

A longer look at Quadratum and Coco

Director Tetsuya Nomura appeared alongside co-director Tai Yasue, despite not being confirmed for the panel in advance. The pair discussed the series’ history and how the development team chooses which Disney films to adapt before introducing the extended footage.

The trailer expands on the Pixar Coco setting, showing additional cutscenes and more of Sora’s battle against a new version of the Heartless in Quadratum. It also provides a clearer look at gameplay and suggests that players will not always control Sora.

Mickey gets a puzzle-focused adventure

Donald and Goofy are shown travelling through the Coco world and fighting enemies without Sora. Mickey Mouse also has his own playable sequence, involving exploration and platforming in a separate environment.

Yasue described Mickey’s section as having a more puzzle-based game design. During the sequence, Mickey can transform into large, small and paper-thin origami versions of himself. The format has an exploratory feel reminiscent of sections found in the Paper Mario series.

Sora’s combat and new traversal options

Sora remains the main playable character, with battles continuing the series’ distinctive action-RPG approach. The trailer also shows him fighting alongside Hector and Miguel from Coco, indicating that his allies will extend beyond the familiar Donald and Goofy partnership.

New traversal abilities are briefly demonstrated as Sora moves through the world. Nomura additionally teased that the game includes an idea the team has held since developing Kingdom Hearts 3, although that concept has not yet been revealed.

Voice cast reunites on stage

Haley Joel Osment, the English voice of Sora, and David Gallagher, who voices Riku, joined the panel to reflect on their time working on the franchise. Miyu Irino, Sora’s Japanese voice actor, shared similar memories in a video appearance.

Osment and Gallagher then performed the final scene from Kingdom Hearts 2 together. It was the first time they had voiced a scene from the series in person.

Kingdom Hearts 4 release platforms and timing

Square Enix first announced Kingdom Hearts 4 in 2022, but offered few further details until the game returned as the closing announcement in June’s Nintendo Direct. It later became the gaming centrepiece of Disney’s D23 showcase, where the 2027 release window and Coco world were first confirmed.

The game is scheduled for late 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X. Nomura and Yasue reaffirmed their commitment to that window during the panel.

A Kingdom Hearts anime is also in development for Disney Plus, although it does not yet have a release window.
