When can Australians watch The Mandalorian and Grogu?

The streaming launch follows the film’s digital release in July and comes after its planned 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray debut on 25 August. For viewers waiting to watch at home, 2 September is the confirmed Disney Plus date.

The film reaches streaming roughly 100 days after its theatrical premiere. It opened in cinemas on 22 May and earned US$345 million worldwide, a respectable result that nevertheless fell well short of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which passed the US$1 billion mark in 2020.

A theatrical Star Wars experiment

The Mandalorian and Grogu represents a move from episodic television to the big screen for characters whose story was built for streaming. Reviews ranged from lukewarm to broadly favourable, with some critics questioning whether the film was aimed at established Star Wars followers or at a younger audience.

One review argued that the production prioritises Grogu’s visual appeal, familiar references and frequent cute moments over deep connections to long-standing lore. The same assessment acknowledged that director Jon Favreau had still managed to shape those ingredients into a feature-length film, even while concluding that it did not fully resemble a traditional Star Wars movie.

Home-release options

The film is already available to buy digitally through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango. The physical release scheduled for 25 August includes standard Blu-ray and DVD editions, a 4K Ultra HD version, a SteelBook and a Beskar Collector’s Edition.

Collectors also have a more interactive option. Hasbro is offering a premium, hyper-realistic animatronic Grogu for US$599.99. The 1:1-scale figure is described as the first of its kind and is designed for collectors, fans and cosplayers. It can also respond to feeding, including Grogu’s familiar “nummies”.

Why it matters to Star Wars fans

The September arrival gives fans a chance to judge the theatrical spin-off at home, whether they followed Din Djarin and Grogu from the beginning or are discovering their partnership through the film. It also marks the latest step in the franchise’s continuing shift between cinema, streaming and physical collecting.
