Soul’s Remnant Turns a Decade of MMO Development Into a Free Steam Launch

A free-to-play MMORPG made by a two-person team has arrived on Steam after roughly a decade of development. Soul’s Remnant is an unusually ambitious indie project, but its early reception suggests that the long wait may have paid off.

A social 2D MMORPG with a retro sensibility

Soul’s Remnant is a 2D platformer MMORPG built around exploration, cooperation and social interaction. Its pixel-art presentation, classless skill system, randomly generated dungeons and bosses give players plenty to explore, either alone or with friends.

Community features sit at the centre of the experience. Players can form guilds, share party-specific housing and operate their own shops. Steam reviewers have compared the game with MapleStory, while highlighting the absence of pay-to-win monetisation.

“Like yes, obviously it’s hard to do. Very hard. But it’s not impossible, especially if you have the passion and determination needed to get this far.”

Developer Chaosmoon discussed that determination in a Reddit development post, explaining that the project began as a one-person effort and grew from a long-held desire to create an MMO.

Plenty to do beyond multiplayer

Although social play is a major focus, solo players are not left without activities. The launch includes more than 40 original songs and 10 villagers, each designed with a distinct personality for players to get to know.

The narrative takes a deliberately cryptic approach. Rather than explaining everything directly, it scatters story details throughout the world, inviting players to assemble their own interpretation in a style reviewers have likened to FromSoftware games.

A small team with a large project

Chaosmoon worked largely alone on Soul’s Remnant for eight years. The developer’s partner joined the project several years ago, and the pair have continued to run it as a passion project supported by a close-knit community.

One Steam player praised the team’s responsiveness, saying bugs they encountered had been fixed on the same day. That hands-on approach may be especially important for a small online game, where community trust can matter as much as content.

The game launched on August 13 and reached nearly 3,000 concurrent Steam players within its first day. That is not enough to challenge a giant such as World of Warcraft, nor does it need to. For a two-person studio, the early figure represents a strong start.

Free to play without selling advantages

Soul’s Remnant is free, with the developers supporting it through a modest Patreon and an in-game cosmetics shop. The shop does not sell gameplay advantages or conveniences such as auto-loot.

The base game already contains hundreds of wearable equipment items, so the cosmetic store is not designed around forcing players to make purchases out of fear of missing out. The developers have said they have no plans to change this monetisation model.

Server costs remain a consideration, but the team believes its systems can scale. If server stability eventually becomes a problem, it would at least indicate that the game has grown substantially.

Early Access with an established foundation

While Soul’s Remnant remains in Early Access, its extended development period means it launches with what the developers describe as an MMO-sized amount of content. Future updates are planned in collaboration with the community.

That approach has already found support on Steam, where the game holds a “very positive” rating. One highly rated review calls it “one of the best MMORPGs I have played in a long time”. Another player, who has spent 300 hours in the game, praised its top-tier soundtrack, described the skill system as a “dopamine driver” and singled out the developers’ rare level of dedication.

For players looking for a retro-style online world rather than a heavily monetised blockbuster, Soul’s Remnant offers a focused alternative. Its early community response suggests there is still room for a small, carefully built MMO on Steam.
