Sanrio and Monsterverse fans have a new crossover to watch, with Hello Kitty and Godzilla characters arriving in McDonald’s Happy Meals across the country from Tuesday, 18 August 2026.
The promotion brings eight Sanrio characters into the Monsterverse, with each character dressed as a famous kaiju. Hello Kitty takes the headline role as Godzilla, while the rest of the collection pairs familiar Sanrio faces with Godzilla’s allies and enemies.

Every Sanrio and Godzilla Happy Meal pairing
The full set includes eight combinations:
- Hello Kitty x Godzilla
- Chococat x Space Godzilla
- Kuromi x MechaGodzilla
- Keroppi x King Ghidorah
- Badtz-Maru x Rodan
- My Melody x Mothra
- Cinnamoroll x Destoroyah
- Pompompurin x Gigan

That makes the collaboration a particularly colourful piece of character merchandising: cute Sanrio designs are being matched with kaiju ranging from the instantly recognisable Godzilla to more unusual choices such as Space Godzilla, Destoroyah and Gigan.

A collection likely to attract serious demand
The crossover is designed to appeal to two large fan communities, but its collectable nature may also create problems at participating restaurants. Similar limited-time promotions have previously attracted scalpers who bought Happy Meals in bulk, leaving unwanted food behind while chasing the toys.

A 2021 Happy Meal promotion featuring Pokémon cards led to toy shortages and reports of adults ordering dozens of meals. The same pattern occurred again in 2025, raising concerns about access for families and the amount of food wasted during collectible campaigns.

Will McDonald’s need new limits?
If bulk buying becomes a recurring issue, McDonald’s may need measures that reduce food waste and stop a small number of buyers from taking most of the toys. The concern is that an especially intense rush could prompt extreme countermeasures.

Japan’s Pokémon Centers have used facial-recognition technology in their stores, and the promotion raises the hypothetical question of whether McDonald’s could ever face similar pressure. For now, the practical challenge is simply making sure fans have a fair chance to collect the eight Sanrio and kaiju designs.
