PC players will not be joining the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 on 19 November. Rockstar Games has said its priority is serving its core audience on fixed hardware first, although concerns around PC piracy may also be part of the decision.

A cheeky same-day alternative

That date now has an unexpected PC release attached to it. Turkish developer Brgames Interactive plans to launch Phantom Vice Auto in Steam Early Access on 19 November, promising an open-world crime game set in a Miami-inspired city.

The timing is remarkably bold. Most publishers and developers are reportedly avoiding releases within six weeks of GTA 6, making this a particularly direct challenge from a team that, at the latest count shown on the company’s website, consists of three people.

What Phantom Vice Auto includes

The available trailer presents a project built around familiar open-world action. Its advertised features include driving four types of car, gunplay with five weapons, pedestrian characters and parkour animations.

There is no confirmed detail in the supplied material about the scope of the story or mission structure. The trailer is more than a year old, however, so the developer may have expanded the game since that footage was released.

The Steam listing also promises three playable characters in the mould of GTA 5: a street-smart hustler, a disgraced former agent and a cold-blooded mercenary. It further advertises a separate 32-player multiplayer mode called Phantom Vice Online.

Early Access expectations

Those promises deserve some caution. The store page uses language suggesting that Phantom Vice Auto and Phantom Vice Auto Online are established entertainment blockbusters receiving a new-generation upgrade, while the developer’s website says work began in 2024. In practical terms, this is an Early Access project rather than a remaster of a known classic.

For Australian players following the broader arcade and gaming news landscape, the comparison is more amusing than realistic. Phantom Vice Auto is not positioned as a genuine replacement for Rockstar’s enormous production; its appeal lies in the audacity of arriving on the same day.

Copycat, curiosity or underdog?

Derivative games can create real problems for the industry. They may crowd digital storefronts, undermine smaller developers and offer little value when they simply imitate better-known work. The footage of Phantom Vice Auto looks rough, and the project remains difficult to assess before its Early Access launch.

Context still matters. This is a three-person Turkish team taking on what is expected to be one of the largest and most expensive game releases ever made. Whether the result is a serious open-world contender or an entertainingly ambitious experiment, Brgames Interactive has chosen an unusually fearless release window.
