Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is preparing to show whether the fantasy franchise can finally support a truly large-scale strategy game. Developed by PlaySide Games, the upcoming PC real-time strategy title will bring rival houses, dragons, undead armies and shifting alliances to the battlefield.
War for Westeros gameplay arrives at Gamescom
After its initial reveal and a later delay, details on the game have been limited. That changes on Tuesday, 25 August, when the first gameplay footage is scheduled to appear during Gamescom Opening Night Live, hosted by Geoff Keighley.
A brief preview shows a Lannister force advancing against Stark troops. The confrontation takes an ominous turn when a dragon appears on the opposing side, suggesting the Lannisters may not escape the fate associated with The Rains of Castamere.

Four factions with distinct strategies
The announced factions include House Lannister, House Stark, House Targaryen and the Night King’s army. Each side is intended to offer its own tactics, abilities and heroes, giving players different ways to compete for control of the Iron Throne.

Diplomacy is another major part of the design. Alliances with different groups can influence the struggle for the throne and may create surprising partnerships. In one example shown in footage, Jon Snow joins forces with the Night King to attack King’s Landing.
