Persona 5 is heading to Fortnite as part of Chapter 7 Season 4, a new Gaming Legends-themed update called Override.
Joker arrives in Override
Atlus has teased the crossover with a brief nine-second video showing Joker, Persona 5’s protagonist, running across a futuristic map before turning towards the camera. The teaser confirms the partnership, but it does not yet explain which characters, outfits or other content will be included.
Epic Games is expected to reveal more about Override and the form of its guest appearances at a later date. The season will also feature Sonic the Hedgehog, following an earlier teaser for the blue mascot’s arrival.
A crossover timed to Persona 5’s anniversary
The Fortnite collaboration is set to coincide with the 10-year anniversary of Persona 5’s release. Since launching, the role-playing game has grown into a major branch of the wider Persona franchise, receiving an enhanced edition, an anime adaptation and several spin-off games.
Persona 5 has also appeared in collaborations with a range of live-service titles. That history has created a fan superstition known as the “Persona 5 curse”.
What is the Persona 5 curse?
The idea is that a live-service game becomes doomed to close within a year of crossing over with Persona 5. Games cited as examples include Star Ocean: Anamnesis, Dragalia Lost, Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag and Nier Reincarnation.
There are, however, plenty of counterexamples. Overwatch, Granblue Fantasy and Another Eden have all collaborated with Persona 5 and continued operating. The supposed pattern may simply reflect how widely recognised the property has become, or the fact that some participating games were already approaching the end of their commercial lives.
Fortnite has no shortage of guest characters, but Persona 5’s arrival gives Override a particularly high-profile role-playing crossover.
What Fortnite players can expect
For now, Joker’s appearance and the season’s title are the confirmed details. Epic has not announced the full crossover line-up, release content or how the Persona 5 material will work in-game. Australian players will need to wait for the official Override reveal for those details.
