Elysium: Matt Damon’s Underrated Sci-Fi Film Is Streaming on Netflix

4

Elysium is a 109-minute dystopian science-fiction film built around one of Matt Damon’s most grounded leading performances. Now streaming on Netflix, Neill Blomkamp’s 2013 feature remains an accessible action film with a sharp, if sometimes heavy-handed, critique of inequality.

spider-man brand new day

Damon has played many kinds of extraordinary men, from the gifted student in Good Will Hunting and the deceptive Tom Ripley to Jason Bourne, Mitch Emhoff in Contagion, Dr Mann in Interstellar and General Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer. In Elysium, however, his character begins as something much closer to an ordinary survivor.

That character is Max Da Costa, a former car thief who is out on parole and trying to keep his life on track. His circumstances change after an accident at Armadyne Corp exposes him to a lethal dose of radiation. The medication supplied by his employers can limit the effects, but Max has only five days to live.

A divided future in orbit

The story begins in 2154, when an overpopulated and heavily polluted Earth has been left behind by its wealthiest residents. They live on Elysium, a technologically advanced orbital station designed to provide comfort, security and distance from the planet’s environmental collapse.

Elysium’s greatest privilege is not simply its luxury. The station has Med-Bays capable of curing diseases and serious health conditions, while people on Earth struggle without reliable access to basic healthcare.

A hacker named Spider, played by Wagner Moura, challenges this arrangement by helping people enter the station illegally. Defense Secretary Delacourt, portrayed by Jodie Foster, responds by defending the system and treating the desperate arrivals as a threat.

Max’s reluctant transformation

Max is not a committed revolutionary like Spider. His earlier crimes were driven largely by survival, and his initial goal is simply to endure long enough to find a solution. The radiation poisoning changes that calculation, forcing him into a desperate confrontation with the society that has denied people like him a dignified life.

His motivation gradually expands beyond personal survival. Max begins to pursue a way to break Elysium’s control over its medical technology so that ordinary people can receive the same treatment. He never becomes a polished, inspirational hero; the film instead keeps him vulnerable, frightened and capable of making painful choices.

Action carrying a blunt social message

Elysium uses its futuristic setting to examine class division and the idea that healthcare should be available as a right rather than reserved for the wealthy. Its politics are direct, and the film does not explore its central ideas with the same depth or originality as Blomkamp’s earlier District 9.

Even so, the action gives the premise momentum. Max eventually receives a powerful exoskeleton to support his failing body, leading to physical, kinetic set pieces that make his declining health part of the film’s conflict. Damon’s performance supplies the emotional connection, presenting a man who spends his final days trying to improve life for people he may never meet.

Where Elysium fits in Damon’s career

The role sits between several very different Damon performances. A year later, he played the secretive Dr Mann in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, while his turn as Groves in Oppenheimer presented a more controlled and authoritative figure. His upcoming portrayal of Odysseus in Nolan’s The Odyssey is another dramatic contrast: that character is a cunning and proud Greek hero associated with turning the Trojan War in the Greeks’ favour in Homer’s Iliad.

Early reactions to The Odyssey have described Damon’s performance as a possible career best, but Max Da Costa works for the opposite reason. He is not defined by supreme intelligence, status or mythic achievement. He is a regular man pushed into an extraordinary situation.

Should you watch Elysium on Netflix?

Elysium may not match the ambition of Blomkamp’s best work, but its committed cast makes the film worthwhile. Damon brings warmth and physical intensity to Max, while Foster and Sharlto Copley, who plays the brutal Agent M. Kruger, add force to the conflict.

For Australian viewers looking for a compact science-fiction action film, Elysium offers a fast-moving story, a memorable visual premise and a clear argument about wealth and access. It is now streaming on Netflix.
