Ghost of Yōtei is set to receive a substantial paid expansion on October 1, bringing a new story adventure, fresh equipment and a single-player survival mode with roguelike elements. A free update will arrive on the same day for every owner of the PS5-exclusive open-world samurai game.
PlayStation and Sucker Punch announced Ghost of Yōtei: Echoes of Sekigahara on August 12. Existing players will be able to purchase the expansion for $15, while a new $70 Ghost of Yōtei: Complete Edition will include the base game, all deluxe edition content and the expansion.
A two-era story adventure
Echoes of Sekigahara follows Atsu across two points in the game’s timeline. In the present, she travels to an unseen valley where the Vipers, a dangerous gang of warriors, have established a hideout.
Flashback sequences will take Atsu to the Battle of Sekigahara, exploring a defining moment in her life before she returned home to begin her quest for vengeance. The expansion will also add new weapons, armour, cosmetic options and other content.
A new combat mode with roguelike elements
The expansion will include a standalone, single-player combat survival mode. Sucker Punch describes it as its own take on a roguelike: players accept bounties to begin runs, defeat enemies, collect perks and unlock additional playable characters.

Free update for every owner
Players who do not purchase the expansion will still receive a free update on October 1. Its headline feature is Beauty of Yōtei, a screensaver-like mode designed to let the game run on a television as a background experience.
The update will also introduce quality-of-life improvements, including an option that appears to allow players to change the visual appearance of armour sets without changing their equipment. No major expansion for the game’s online mode has been announced as part of this October update.
“Thank you again to everyone for an amazing year since Ghost of Yōtei launched,” Sucker Punch said. The studio added that more details on Most Wanted and Echoes of Sekigahara would be shared ahead of the October 1 launch.
While Ghost of Yōtei is built for PS5 rather than a traditional cabinet, its samurai combat and cinematic presentation may appeal to players who enjoy focused action experiences.
