Grounded 2’s toe biter buggy takes preparation, exploration and a difficult fight beneath the giant oak tree in the Into the Abyss region. You must unlock its nest recipe, gather upgraded materials and defeat Papa Toe Biter to collect an egg.

This guide covers the complete route, including the nest recipe location, crafting requirements, egg location and the hazards to expect along the way.

What you need for the toe biter buggy

Before you can hatch the buggy, collect these three essentials:

  • The toe biter nest crafting recipe
  • A completed toe biter nest
  • A toe biter egg

The nest recipe is unlocked by finding an optical disk in the Gnarly Bark region. Crafting the nest requires the following resources:

  • 8 horsetail stems
  • 4 sunken bones
  • 6 cattail fluff
  • 4 lint rope
  • 5 algae

You also need a tier 3 axe to chop cattail ends and a tier 2 clipper to cut horsetail stems. These upgrades cost several thousand Raw Science. Completing unfinished story missions and using the resource finder to locate O.R.C. enemies can help. Defeating enough O.R.C. enemies triggers waves sent by the Stranger; surviving those waves rewards a substantial amount of Raw Science.

If your tools are not ready, upgrade them before collecting the egg. Alternatively, build an egg storage device so the egg does not spoil while you gather the required resources and improve your equipment. How to unlock the toe biter nest recipe

The optical disk is high in the tree, and the route includes several powerful enemies. Tier 2 or tier 3 armour with strong defence is recommended, along with spicy and slashing weapons. You can also lower the game’s difficulty if the enemies make the trip too demanding.

Begin at the memorial point of interest near the candles in Gnarly Bark. To the left of the memorial, follow the tree root towards the mushrooms. Watch for the wasp hovering near the root, then enter the opening in the trunk.

Continue upwards and out of the tree. A small group of roaches will not bother you unless attacked, while two earwigs are aggressive but can be outrun.

At the end of this route, you will emerge outside again. Follow the mushroom trail upwards to another tree entrance. Inside, tang-soaked beetles are fighting a tang-powered ant, leaving tang across the floor. Jump around the contaminated areas where possible. Potato bug armour or a tang-reducing smoothie can reduce the effect if you become contaminated.

The optical disk rests in the middle of the room beside a dead Ominent worker. Take it to the nearest ranger station and insert it into a terminal. This unlocks both the toe biter nest recipe and a recipe for diving boots.

Where to find a toe biter egg

The toe biter egg is also found near the Gnarly Bark memorial, although the egg comes from the boss inside a cave behind the memorial photograph. A toe biter nymph guards the entrance, while Papa Toe Biter waits inside.

Toe biters are weak only to spicy damage, so take a spicy orb weapon or spicy arrows. The enemies inflict both venom and chill. Venom builds rapidly and can drain your health, making scorpidote smoothies valuable for reducing venom buildup. Bringing an ant buggy or ladybuggy is also useful because the journey back with the egg is lengthy.

Papa Toe Biter’s attacks

  • Cold gust: launches a pressurised-air orb that increases chill.
  • Spin attack: after a brief pause at close range, Papa Toe Biter spins and applies both venom and chill.
  • Bite: increases your venom and chill buildup.

Papa Toe Biter also periodically summons two toe biter nymphs, so keep moving and manage the smaller enemies during the fight.

Hatch the toe biter buggy

Defeating Papa Toe Biter makes it drop several toe biter eggs. Collect one and leave through the only exit from the chamber. The route continues into a dangerous cave with spiders and other enemies below, but turning left leads to a safer way out of the tree.

Return to your completed toe biter nest, place the egg inside and wait for it to hatch. Once the process is complete, the toe biter buggy is ready to use. If you are planning a dedicated gaming setup, RETROCADE also has arcade machines, arcade parts and DIY arcade kits.
