Overwatch Season 4 Makes Lifeweaver’s Life Grip Riskier

Overwatch Season 4 introduces a new tank, a reworked Battle Pass and a significant adjustment to Lifeweaver’s Life Grip. The change gives rescued teammates more control, but it may also make emergency saves easier to interrupt.

What Season 4 adds to Overwatch

Season 4 launches with D.Mon, also known as Yuna Lee, joining the MEKA Squad alongside D.Va. D.Mon is a tank built around close-range defence, using her Plasma Saber and Power Barrier to shield allies while attacking nearby opponents.

The season also changes the Battle Pass, giving players more choice over which rewards they unlock and the order in which they claim them. For Lifeweaver players, however, the headline adjustment is aimed at one of the support hero’s most recognisable abilities.

How Life Grip now works

Life Grip allows Lifeweaver to target an ally and pull them back to his location. The teammate is protected during the journey, making the ability useful for extracting a low-health player from a fight just before they are eliminated.

From Season 4, a player caught by Life Grip can cancel the pull by pressing their jump bind after 0.6 seconds. The intention is to prevent unwanted rescues, particularly when a Lifeweaver pulls someone away from a fight they were close to winning or uses the ability disruptively.

The trade-off is that the rescued player may now interrupt a well-timed save without realising it. During a chaotic team fight, players are focused on avoiding attacks, activating abilities and surviving with rapidly falling health. Pressing jump at the wrong moment could stop the pull and leave them in the danger Lifeweaver was trying to escape.

Blizzard’s reasoning

Blizzard says the update is designed to give Life Gripped players greater control over whether they complete the journey to Lifeweaver. The pull now starts more gradually, creating a longer opportunity to react and cancel the movement.

“These changes give Life Gripped players greater control over whether they are pulled all the way to Lifeweaver’s position,” Blizzard explained in the patch notes. “The pull now begins more gradually, creating a larger window to react and cancel the movement if desired.”

Why Lifeweaver mains are concerned

The choice of jump as the cancellation input has attracted particular criticism. Players often press jump repeatedly during moments of panic, especially when they are close to death or affected by damage over time. That creates a risk that a teammate will cancel a rescue accidentally, then lose their life while Lifeweaver’s ability is unavailable.

Discussion in the Lifeweaver Mains subreddit included suggestions to move the function to crouch or interact instead. One player argued that someone rescued at six health while burning may press several buttons at once, cancel the Grip and die while wasting the cooldown.

Another player who regularly encounters disruptive Lifeweaver play also said jump was a poor choice, warning that players may cancel saves they genuinely need because jump is commonly spammed.

There is a setting that allows players to disable Life Grip cancellation completely. However, players must know the option exists and manually change it, so it may not help those who never explore the settings menu.

Life Grip is slower as well

The cancellation change is accompanied by a reduction to Life Grip’s base pull speed, from 30 to 25 metres per second. Allies pulled from more than 15 metres away will also begin moving more slowly before accelerating.

These adjustments could make distant rescues less immediate and give the target more time to cancel the movement. They also place greater pressure on Lifeweaver players to judge timing, distance and their teammate’s movement during a fight.

Will the change weaken Lifeweaver?

It is too early to know whether the new cancellation system will seriously reduce Life Grip’s value. Season 4 has only just arrived, and players still need time to learn when to stop jumping during a rescue.

The result will depend on whether teammates adapt quickly enough to avoid accidental cancellations. Until then, Lifeweaver players may see more perfectly timed saves fail just as their allies are being pulled out of danger.
