Darkest Dungeon is expanding beyond games, with Vault Comics preparing a canonical graphic-novel series set in Red Hook Studios’ bleak gothic world. A crowdfunding campaign for the project is scheduled to begin in October.

The original Darkest Dungeon launched in 2016 as a punishing roguelike role-playing game about adventurers battling cultists and abominations while suffering physical and psychological deterioration. Its 2023 sequel continued the series, and new downloadable content for the original game is due on August 18.

The upcoming comics will build on the game’s mythology. The story centres on a family whose ancestor unleashed an ancient evil while pursuing knowledge and power, leaving later heroes to confront the consequences.
A canonical story for Darkest Dungeon
Vault Comics is developing the series with horror writer John Lees, artist Maan House and Chris Bourassa, the creative director and co-founder of Red Hook Studios. House previously illustrated Titan Comics’ adaptation of Dark Souls.

The project is intended to work for both established fans and readers who have never picked up a graphic novel. Rewards from the crowdfunding campaign will cater to comics collectors as well as players interested in learning more about the setting and its characters.

Long-time followers can expect additional detail about the mysteries surrounding the game’s world, while newcomers will be offered an entry point into its grim cast of heroes and horrors.

From game inspiration to comic-book page
Bourassa said his visual influences include the carefully composed panels of Bronze Age Batman and the energetic splash pages associated with the Image Comics revolution. He also described Darkest Dungeon as a project shaped by a longstanding love of comics and said he had hoped to see the setting transferred to the page.

Vault chief creative officer Adrian Wassel connected the project’s comic-book approach with Bourassa’s appreciation for X-Men. In his view, the game’s severe, macabre and occasionally funny world already contained the foundations of a comic series.
That makes the adaptation more than a simple retelling. The new books will feature the familiar heroes while opening room for a separate story within the established mythology.

What Australian arcade fans should know
Darkest Dungeon is not being announced as an arcade cabinet release here; this project is a graphic-novel expansion of the game’s universe. Its bleak art direction and character-focused storytelling may still appeal to players who enjoy atmospheric experiences alongside their arcade news and retro-gaming interests.
For anyone planning a dedicated gaming space, RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide can help with broader cabinet decisions, while compact bartop arcades suit smaller Australian rooms. Builders working on a custom setup can also browse arcade parts for controls and replacement hardware.

The graphic-novel campaign is expected to open in October. Until then, the confirmed details are the creative team, the canonical setting and the plan to serve both experienced fans and new readers.
