False Memory is 2026’s strangest anime surprise
False Memory, also known as Memory Management Bureau, is a dazzling science-fiction anime from Flint Sugar. After three episodes, it has already established a distinctive blend of surreal imagery, emotional storytelling and restless creative energy.

Animation that makes emotion visible
The animation is especially confident. The opening sequence uses surreal compositions and fluid transitions that feel dreamlike, matching the poetic song “Wangji Le Ye Meiguanxi” (“It’s Okay to Forget”) by Doudou.
Even scenes that could have become routine exposition, including the explanation of BUGs in episode two, are staged through distorted environments and shifting imagery. Places change shape, pictures merge and feelings become something the audience can see. The visual experimentation is not decoration for its own sake; it reinforces the series’ ideas about memory, emotion and perception.
This combination of formal ambition and sincerity gives False Memory the spirit of an experimental anime classic without reducing it to an imitation. Its bizarre moments work because they are in service of character and theme.
