Netflix’s live-action The Witcher began in 2019, adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels while drawing visual comparisons with CD Projekt’s popular role-playing games. The series’ conclusion now appears to be further away, with the fifth and final season reportedly shifting from 2026 to 2027.
What’s on Netflix reports that season five has moved into 2027. Netflix had previously indicated that the final instalment would arrive later this year, but Geralt’s recognisable long silver hair reportedly disappeared from promotional material on the service’s platforms. Sources cited in the report say the season has left its original release window.
The delay is notable because seasons four and five were filmed back to back. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich described the pair as companion seasons, and no reshoots have been confirmed. The extra time could be related to post-production work, including visual effects for the show’s creatures, although a change to Netflix’s release schedule is another possibility.
The final run has also been affected by a major change in its central casting. Henry Cavill played Geralt during the earlier seasons before leaving the role. In an interview, Cavill told The Hollywood Reporter that he had been committed to seven seasons that would “honor Sapkowski’s work”.
Liam Hemsworth, who appeared in The Hunger Games, took over as Geralt. His arrival prompted renewed discussion about the series’ differences from its literary source material. Cavill has since turned his attention to Warhammer 40K.
By the time the final season arrives, The Witcher will be competing in a much stronger market for game-inspired television. Amazon’s Fallout and HBO’s The Last of Us have become major rivals, while Netflix has faced criticism over the short runs or cancellations of other popular programmes.
However, the response to Cavill’s departure and the later episodes does not appear to have caused a major audience collapse. Engagement figures suggest the outrage did not translate into a significant drop in viewership.
