The Odyssey becomes Christopher Nolan’s biggest film yet
The Odyssey has crossed a major global box-office milestone, earning more than $1.1 billion worldwide. That result moves Christopher Nolan’s latest film past The Dark Knight Rises, which finished on $1.08 billion without adjusting either figure for inflation.
The film’s theatrical run also appears to have plenty of room left. It took $110 million domestically during its fourth weekend, a relatively small week-to-week decline for a blockbuster. A release in China, one of the world’s largest film markets, is still to come.
Nolan joins Hollywood’s biggest directors
Nolan’s films have now generated more than $7 billion at the worldwide box office. That places him third among the highest-grossing directors, behind James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. The ranking is not adjusted for inflation, but it remains a significant achievement with Nolan likely to make more films in the future.
IMAX and 70mm screenings drive another record
The Odyssey has set another benchmark by becoming IMAX’s highest-grossing release. Its IMAX total has reached $289 million, overtaking Avatar at $271 million.
About 14% of that IMAX revenue came from 70mm screenings. Only 41 cinemas worldwide can show films in that format, making the scale of that contribution especially notable. Strong demand for both IMAX and 70mm presentations has helped the film maintain its momentum.
The film is also currently the second-highest-grossing R-rated release ever. Deadpool and Wolverine remains in first place with $1.3 billion, although The Odyssey has a realistic chance of closing that gap.
A strong year for cinemas
Alongside Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has already reached $1.67 billion, The Odyssey is contributing to a major rebound for the film industry in 2026. The Australian and international results form part of a wider global box-office story, while the US domestic market is on course to approach $10 billion for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day could become the first film to earn $1 billion domestically and may also reach $3 billion worldwide. Several smaller productions have exceeded expectations too, including Obsession and Backrooms, both of which earned many times more than their budgets.
