A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Kumamoto on July 28, causing dozens of deaths and widespread damage. Hundreds of homes were destroyed as communities began the difficult process of recovery, with more than 8,000 people evacuated from affected areas just over a week later.
Nintendo has announced practical support for customers in areas covered by Japan’s Disaster Relief Act. The company has pledged to repair products damaged in the earthquake, alongside a separate financial donation.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake,” writes Nintendo. “We will provide free repairs for our products to customers located in areas designated under the Disaster Relief Act due to this earthquake, for requests made up to February 1, 2027. Additionally, to support those affected, we will donate 50 million yen through the Japanese Red Cross Society.”
The free service covers Nintendo consoles, including Switch and Switch 2 systems, as well as their peripherals. It applies regardless of warranty status, although Nintendo notes that some products may be too badly damaged to repair. Customers must be located in an officially designated disaster-relief area, and requests need to be made by February 1, 2027.
The scale of the damage remains severe. Estimates cited in the aftermath put the number of destroyed homes at 700, with a further 12,000 damaged and approximately 45,000 properties without running water. At the time of reporting, 38 deaths had been confirmed, including fatalities connected with the collapse of a local Aeon Mall.
Recovery is also taking place during dangerous summer conditions. Extreme overall weather, including record-breaking heat, is increasing the risk of heatstroke and exhaustion for residents and emergency workers. Authorities are also monitoring the region for possible aftershocks as the fault lines settle.
