Firewatch is leaving Xbox Game Pass soon
Firewatch, Campo Santo’s atmospheric 2016 adventure, will leave Xbox Game Pass on 15 August 2026. Its compact four-to-six-hour campaign makes it an ideal weekend playthrough, but its emotional impact has lasted far longer for many players.

A quiet job in the Wyoming wilderness
The story follows Henry, who accepts a summer position as a fire lookout in Wyoming’s Shoshone National Forest. The game is set in 1989, one year after a devastating fire, and places Henry in a remote wooden tower surrounded by an immense forest.
His escape from ordinary life is complicated by a painful reality: Henry’s wife is seriously ill, will not recover, and there is nothing he can do to change that. The isolation of the lookout offers distance from the world, but not freedom from grief.

Two voices across the radio
Henry’s duties include repairing a damaged bridge, investigating reports about unruly teenagers and restoring faulty power lines. He receives those assignments from Delilah, his supervisor, whose voice is his main connection to another person.
Delilah is also trying to keep the wider world at arm’s length. Their shared desire for solitude gradually becomes the centre of the game, with Rich Sommer—best known as Harry Crane in Mad Men—playing Henry and Cissy Jones, who later appeared in Baldur’s Gate 3, playing Delilah.
The game’s central idea remains recognisable: the wish to disconnect, find a private space and step away from constant public judgement is not limited to one era. Sommer discussed that feeling in a 2016 interview, describing social media as a place where anonymity can encourage harsh comments about a public figure’s work and appearance. He said he used the platform sparingly, mainly to discuss board games, while trying to handle both praise and criticism without being overwhelmed.

Why Firewatch still works
Firewatch arrived during a particularly strong year for independent games, alongside releases such as Stardew Valley, Hyper Light Drifter and Oxenfree. It earned five Game Awards nominations, and its focused design still helps it stand apart a decade later.
Its strength is not simply that it explores grief. The game gives players room to settle into an unfamiliar version of life and keep moving through circumstances they never expected. That approach makes it feel more like a thoughtful, interactive form of self-care than a conventional dramatic adventure.

Play it before 15 August
Xbox Game Pass subscribers have until 15 August to experience Firewatch through the service. With a complete story that can be finished in roughly four to six hours, it is a particularly manageable recommendation for players looking for a memorable adventure without a lengthy commitment.
For a more traditional home gaming experience after your time in the lookout tower, RETROCADE also offers compact bartop arcades and full arcade machines.
