Blizzard has revealed D.Mon, the next playable hero arriving in Overwatch. She is the second member of Korea’s MEKA Squad to join the roster, following fellow mech pilot and former esports champion D.Va.

D.Mon is designed as her own character rather than a variation on D.Va. Her concept combines the classic “sword and board” tank archetype with influences from Armored Core and Gundam. She is a close-range fighter with leadership responsibilities, contrasting with D.Va’s more aggressive, front-line identity.

D.Mon is a mobile melee tank whose abilities are built around a Plasma Sword, a personal barrier and controlled movement. Her primary attack lets her slash from side to side, while a shoulder-mounted Fusion Repeater provides short, accurate bursts at range.

Her shield is narrower than Reinhardt’s barrier and appears primarily suited to protecting D.Mon herself. A horizontal dash, governed by a fuel meter, gives her the ability to glide across the battlefield and reposition with the mechanical movement associated with Armored Core.

  • Plasma Sword: a close-range attack that sweeps left and right.
  • Fusion Repeater: a shoulder-mounted weapon that fires precise bursts.
  • Power Barrier: a narrower shield intended mainly for D.Mon’s own protection.
  • Surging Strike: D.Mon raises her shield, then uses her primary attack to dash into enemies and knock them back.
  • Limit Break: her ultimate charges the sword for a multi-target strike, applies a debuff similar to Zenyatta’s Discord effect and grants overhealth.

When D.Mon’s mech, called Beast, is destroyed beyond repair, she ejects and continues fighting on foot. In pilot form, she removes the Fusion Repeater and carries it like a minigun. After a short cooldown, she can recall Beast. Instead of dropping from above like D.Va’s mech Toki, Beast rebuilds itself around D.Mon, reassembling dramatically and knocking back nearby enemies.

Blizzard’s hero producer Kenny Hudson said D.Mon was created to broaden the game’s melee tank options. Reinhardt has remained a popular close-quarters choice, but D.Mon adds greater horizontal mobility and some ability to flank while still occupying space at the front of a fight.

Her counters are expected to resemble those of Reinhardt, Doomfist and other melee tanks, with vertical movement remaining an effective answer. D.Mon’s extra mobility, however, gives her more control over positioning and how engagements begin.

D.Mon’s story arrives as the narrative shifts to Busan, which is being attacked by the Junkers: Junker Queen, Wrecking Ball, Junkrat and Roadhog. They are operating under the direction of Talon leader Vendetta, bringing the conflict closer to the MEKA Squad.

With D.Va away, the squad has been dealing with changes to its structure, including questions about leadership and how to fight the Gwishin. D.Mon steps into that leadership role, while her arrival also creates room to explore her friendship with D.Va.

D.Mon’s personality and design

D.Mon has appeared in earlier Overwatch story material, including comics, but Blizzard has developed her into a full playable character. The team’s challenge was to make her distinctive from D.Va and give her more depth than a single defining trait.

She is composed and difficult to read, with an “ice queen” demeanour, but she is also competitive and enjoys gaming. She is a Gundam fan who spends time building and tinkering in her room. Her teasing and provocation are deliberate tools: she uses them to motivate teammates and unsettle opponents.

That personality is reflected in her imagined streaming style. Rather than showing her face, she would keep the camera focused on her hands and gameplay.

D.Mon joins Overwatch with season 4, launching on August 11. She will be the game’s 53rd hero and its 15th tank.
