Robert Pattinson’s career has moved far beyond his early role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight films. After The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 arrived in 2012, he pursued increasingly challenging projects, including Remember Me, Water for Elephants, Good Time, High Life, The Lighthouse and Tenet.
He has also played Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman, with its sequel currently tracking towards February 2028. More recently, Pattinson has embraced stranger performances, including roles in Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron.
That run continues in 2026. Pattinson appears as Antinous in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, alongside Zendaya, who is also starring as Athena in the same film and MJ in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The pair will reunite later in the year for Dune: Part 3, the planned final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga.
Before those large-scale releases, Pattinson and Zendaya made their first major 2026 screen pairing in A24’s dark psychological comedy The Drama. The 105-minute film arrived on HBO Max on July 31 and has since reached the service’s number-one film position, as tracked by FlixPatrol.

The film follows Charlie, played by Pattinson, and Emma, played by Zendaya, as they prepare to marry. They have been together for several years, but a secret-sharing exchange with two friends exposes how much remains unknown between them.
The film’s promotion deliberately kept the couple’s most damaging revelations hidden. That approach makes it better to begin without knowing the details, allowing the confessions to land with their intended force.
Most of the story focuses on the consequences. As Charlie and Emma move towards their wedding night, their relationship becomes a tense examination of trust, judgement and the limits of forgiveness. The result is an unsettling psychological drama with a darkly comic edge.

The Drama ending explained

The film raises uncomfortable questions about morality, including whether private thoughts should be judged in the same way as actions. Those ideas sit at the centre of the conflict between Charlie and Emma.
Charlie learns that Emma once considered carrying out a school shooting. The revelation sends him into a crisis over whether their marriage should proceed. The couple ultimately goes ahead with the wedding, but the event rapidly falls apart.
Emma fears Charlie has revealed her secret to a co-worker. At the same time, that co-worker’s boyfriend discovers that Charlie attempted to sleep with her and responds by beating him. Emma leaves the wedding, while Charlie ends up alone at the diner the couple had planned to visit together.
The final scenes offer a guarded sense of hope. Although Emma now knows Charlie judged her harshly and tried to cheat, she still joins him at the diner. Charlie is bloodied and dishevelled, but the pair decide to behave as though they are meeting for the first time.
It is less a clean resolution than an agreement to begin again. They have confronted each other’s darkest secrets, including one from Emma that is considerably more serious, and choose to put the immediate past behind them. Their marriage may remain difficult, but the week surrounding the wedding has set an exceptionally high bar for future hardship.
A tense film finding a wider streaming audience
The Drama combines a compact runtime with a deliberately guarded premise, then builds its impact through the couple’s increasingly destructive choices. Its HBO Max performance gives the A24 release a fresh audience beyond its initial cinema run.
