Marvel’s Ultimate Universe Gets a Smaller, Cheaper Collection Format

Marvel is preparing a new range of affordable collected editions for the first year of Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Universe. The move follows the success of DC’s compact paperback line, which was first announced in 2023.

Four Ultimate series head to paperback

Marvel’s announcement confirms four new volumes, each collecting the opening 12 issues of a major Ultimate title:

  • Ultimate Spider-Man
  • Ultimate Black Panther
  • Ultimate X-Men
  • Ultimates

The individual stories are already available in conventional trade paperback editions, so the content itself is not new. The significant change is the format. Marvel is calling these releases “compact comic” editions, matching the name and broad concept of DC’s smaller collections.

A $9.99 format designed for accessibility

Each new paperback will cost $9.99, placing it alongside DC’s Compact Comics pricing. Marvel has not yet confirmed the physical dimensions, although a digest-sized format similar to DC’s range would be a logical expectation. At this stage, the publisher has not supplied final measurements.

For readers, the appeal is straightforward: a complete first-year collection of a popular series in a smaller and less expensive package. That could make the Ultimate titles easier to sample, collect and carry than standard trade editions.

How this differs from Marvel Premier Collection

This is not Marvel’s first attempt to establish a lower-cost alternative to traditional collected editions. The Marvel Premier Collection was unveiled in 2024 with a similar aim.

Premier Collection books are slightly larger than DC’s compact editions and cost $14.99 each. The range has also attracted criticism for its cover design, particularly the prominent Premier Collection branding, which some readers consider less refined than the presentation used for DC’s books.

Despite those complaints, Marvel has continued with the Premier Collection programme. Several previously announced volumes remain scheduled for release through the end of 2026 and into 2027.

Two Marvel collection formats now share the shelf

The new Ultimate Universe books are scheduled to arrive in April and June 2027. Their announcement leaves the future relationship between the compact editions and Premier Collection uncertain.

DC’s approach has become prominent enough that Marvel may decide a closer match is the clearest way to serve readers seeking inexpensive, space-conscious paperbacks. Whether the new range becomes a permanent publishing format will likely depend on its reception and how it sits alongside the existing Premier Collection books.

What we know so far

  • Titles: Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Black Panther, Ultimate X-Men and Ultimates.
  • Content: The first 12 issues of each series.
  • Price: $9.99 per volume.
  • Format: Marvel’s “compact comic” paperback format.
  • Dimensions: Not yet announced.
  • Release window: April and June 2027.

DC’s established Compact Comics range shows why the idea has momentum: smaller books can reduce the entry price without changing the stories being collected. Marvel’s Ultimate editions will test whether that same balance works for its modern superhero line-up.
