New packaging for some disc-equipped PlayStation 5 consoles appears to warn customers that newly released games will move to digital-only sales from January 2028.
The sticker has reportedly appeared on recent PS5 restocks, including a 1TB standard model fitted with a disc drive. Its message says future PlayStation games will be available through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital format only.
The packaging was brought to wider attention after Push Square reported on an image shared by the Behind the Games account on X.
What Sony’s reported notice says
The English-language sticker is headed “Important Notice” and contains this wording:
“From Jan 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”
The wording separates games released from January 2028 onwards from older physical titles. It indicates that discs for games released before that date should remain playable on a PS5 with a disc drive.
The accompanying social-media post said new console batches were beginning to reach shops with the message printed on their boxes. In a later post, the account said the photograph had come from a “trusted source” and promised an unboxing video at a later date.
⚠️ New PS5 shipments are reportedly arriving at shops with a digital-only games notice on the box.

Why the retail listing is significant
A photograph of a loose sticker is easy to question, since it could be printed and attached to a console box by almost anyone. The evidence gained weight when the German Amazon listing for the 1TB “Standard” PS5 was reportedly updated during the same week to show the same notice.
That retail-image change is more persuasive than the photograph on its own, although it does not explain the full scope of Sony’s plans. A major brand’s product-page images can be amended by a relatively small group of retail or brand-management staff, whereas a physical label is straightforward to reproduce.
A possible European consumer-law requirement
Sony may also be taking a precautionary approach rather than announcing every detail of its future release strategy. European Union consumer laws can require manufacturers to give customers clear advance information when an electronic product’s functions are expected to become obsolete or change substantially.
For Australian players, the notice highlights the changing balance between discs, downloads and hardware designed around a fixed library.
