Final Fantasy XIV has launched on Nintendo Switch 2, giving players another way to experience Square Enix’s long-running MMORPG on the go. The game’s arrival may make the discounted launch versions tempting, but there is an important reason to hold off on buying one immediately.
Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? The familiar question is relevant here because the Switch 2 version includes access to the game’s substantial free trial.
Rather than stopping with A Realm Reborn and Heavensward, the expanded trial now includes Stormblood and Shadowbringers. That takes the free-trial level cap to 80 and gives players access to the job classes introduced by those expansions:
- Machinist
- Astrologian
- Dancer
- Dark Knight
- Red Mage
- Gunbreaker
- Samurai

Once you finish the Shadowbringers content, the next step is buying the Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition. That package includes the later expansions Endwalker and Dawntrail. Buying any game licence also provides 30 days of subscription time before a monthly subscription becomes necessary.
Players who already subscribe on another platform must purchase a separate Switch 2 licence and a new subscription for the console. The Switch 2 subscription is available at half price. However, playing on Nintendo Switch 2—or PlayStation 5—does not require an additional console online subscription, unlike playing on Xbox.
What the free trial restricts
The free trial is extensive, but it is not the same as owning the full game. Chat commands are restricted, some online-store content is unavailable, and characters can hold no more than 300,000 gil, the game’s currency.
