Disney Plus is bringing selected TikTok content to its mobile app in a new partnership designed to make fan-created videos part of the streaming experience. The move comes just days after Disney cancelled the second season of the Emmy-nominated Wonder Man.
How TikTok content will appear on Disney Plus
The new “Verts” feature will offer a feed of selected Disney-related TikToks from participating creators. Videos may explore characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, FX and other parts of the company’s entertainment portfolio.
TikTok will receive access to assets connected with Disney films and television series, while Disney Plus subscribers will be able to watch related short-form videos inside the app. Disney says the arrangement is intended to encourage fan discussion, strengthen online communities and give audiences more ways to interact with its stories.
Asad Ayaz, Disney’s chief marketing and brand officer, said fans have always been central to the company’s storytelling. He described the deal as a link between Disney’s official stories and the creativity they inspire, giving creators greater visibility and audiences more content to discover.
Creators will receive rewards and extra exposure
Participation will be supported through the Disney Creator Ambassador Program. Eligible creators can receive special rewards, increased visibility, invitations to exclusive events and access to career-development opportunities.
Disney also pointed to TikTok’s internal figures to explain the partnership’s potential. Fans shared an average of 6.5 million film- and television-related posts on TikTok each day last year. Research found that nearly half of surveyed viewers watched a film or television show after discovering it on the platform.
For Disney, the arrangement offers a way to amplify fan activity while promoting its own properties through user-created material. The announcement follows Wonder Man’s cancellation
The timing has prompted criticism because Disney recently cancelled Wonder Man, one of its best-received television series, despite having previously approved a second season. The Emmy-nominated Marvel show will not continue, and showrunner Andrew Guest said scheduling was not the reason.
Guest explained that the decision instead reflected the current direction of Disney and Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe plans. He said the cast and creative team wanted to continue, contracts had been signed, schedules had been cleared, and the writers’ room was due to begin that week, with production planned for early the following year. An internal decision was ultimately made that continuing the series no longer made sense, even though it had seemed viable several months earlier.
Questions remain about TikTok and quality control
TikTok continues to attract controversy over concerns that the Chinese government could access user data through its parent company, ByteDance. Following threats of a ban, the Trump administration reached an arrangement with the company that allowed TikTok to keep operating in the United States. Since then, TikTok users have claimed that they were censored when posting material that criticised Donald Trump or his allies directly or indirectly.
The Disney agreement also appears to take the place of a previously planned partnership with OpenAI’s Sora, an AI video-generation service. That arrangement was eventually abandoned due to cost inefficiencies.
Whether the new feed becomes a useful extension of Disney Plus or makes the service feel less curated remains to be seen. The emphasis on user-created videos has already raised concerns that the platform’s overall quality could decline.
