Nintendo’s Switch 2 has attracted strong third-party support, but several high-profile games have needed more time than expected. Diablo 4 is reportedly heading to the console in September, while bringing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 across remains a substantial technical task.
Diablo 4 could arrive in September
A report from billbil-kun at Dealabs Magazine claims Blizzard’s action RPG will launch on Switch 2 around the week of 15 September. That would put the Nintendo version roughly three years behind the game’s original release.
The reported price is $70. The physical edition is said to contain a download code rather than a game cartridge, and it is not yet clear whether the package will include the latest Lord of Hatred expansion.
A Switch 2 release would make Diablo 4’s loot-focused, demon-slaying campaign playable on a handheld Nintendo system. The game has been verified on Steam Deck, although finding one at an affordable price can still be difficult. For more gaming and hardware updates, visit RETROCADE’s Arcade Blog.
Why has the port taken so long?
Rod Fergusson, the franchise’s former head, previously said Switch 2 has enough performance to run Diablo 4. He indicated that the larger concern was not raw hardware capability, but the practical difficulty of supporting a live-service game on Nintendo platforms, where similar projects have presented challenges in the past.
That explanation is not entirely straightforward, given that always-online multiplayer titles including Warframe and Fortnite have already run on Switch. Still, a live-service conversion involves more than reproducing the core game, with ongoing online support also part of the task.
Clair Obscur faces an Unreal Engine 5 hurdle
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has encountered a different obstacle. Its developers recently pointed to Unreal Engine 5 features that are not supported on Switch 2. They described adapting the 2025 role-playing hit as a “big technical challenge” that would require time to complete.
The situation highlights why modern console conversions can demand significant engineering work, even when a new system appears powerful enough on paper. Players comparing platforms can also consult RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide for a broader look at hardware considerations.
