Amazon’s God of War television adaptation is facing another casting change. A new report indicates that Atreus and Thrud may be played by different actors when the second season arrives.
The first season originally cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Callum Vinson as Atreus and Island Austin as Thrud. Hurst, known for Sons of Anarchy, reportedly suffered an injury during production and is being replaced as Kratos. New casting information now points to further changes involving the two younger characters.
A report from MP1st identified casting calls issued in May that correspond with the earlier descriptions for Atreus and Thrud. The roles are now seeking performers aged 14 to 17, instead of actors between nine and 12.
Why Atreus and Thrud are being recast
The opening season adapts the 2018 God of War game, while season two is expected to move into the story of 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok. The games include a time jump, and both Atreus and Thrud take on more physically demanding, action-focused roles.
The production appears to be choosing older performers for those roles rather than waiting for the previously selected actors to grow into the required age range. That decision would also align the television adaptation more closely with the later stage of the story.
These changes follow Hurst’s reported departure and create questions about how smoothly the adaptation will carry its characters between seasons. Viewers will have to wait for footage before judging the impact, but the recasting means audiences will not see Vinson develop as Atreus in the way Bella Ramsey has grown into Ellie across The Last of Us.
Production remains in flux
At present, there is no indication of further major recasts across the first two seasons. The first episode still has no announced premiere date, and filming must restart with a new performer in the role of Kratos.
The next game in the broader series, God of War Laufey, is scheduled for PlayStation 5 on 16 February 2027.
