Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to arrive in IMAX across North America from August 6, following a remarkable opening weekend. The release ends The Odyssey’s exclusive hold on the format, although Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster will continue screening at selected IMAX venues. For Australian film and arcade fans alike, it is another reminder of the enduring appeal of large-format entertainment.
The new Spider-Man film earned $360 million domestically in its opening weekend, the biggest ever recorded in the United States. Its worldwide opening reached $927 million, placing it second on the all-time list behind Avengers: Endgame, which opened globally to $1.22 billion.
Together, Brand New Day and The Odyssey helped create the largest domestic box-office weekend in history, generating more than $430 million. Nolan’s film has earned $911.4 million worldwide, adding further momentum to an unusually strong period for cinema.
Spider-Man remains a dependable cinema draw
The wider Marvel Cinematic Universe has experienced some uneven results in recent years. Phase 5 releases including Thunderbolts* and The Marvels fell short of expectations, but Spider-Man has continued to perform strongly.
Spider-Man: No Way Home earned almost $2 billion, making it the MCU’s third-highest-grossing film behind Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War. Earlier, Spider-Man: Far From Home also passed the billion-dollar mark.
That consistency makes the character an important part of the modern blockbuster landscape. It also gives cinemas another major event release at a time when audiences are increasingly selective about which films deserve a trip to the theatre.
A strong year for the box office and IMAX
The performance of Brand New Day and The Odyssey has helped put the US domestic box office on course to exceed $10 billion for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Domestic revenue has already passed $6 billion.
Toy Story 5 currently leads the US box office, though Brand New Day is expected to overtake it. The result is also welcome news for Disney after disappointing performances from the live-action Moana and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
IMAX is coming off its best year in history, recording $1.28 billion at the global box office during 2025. The company appears well placed to exceed that total, with The Odyssey becoming the fastest film to reach $200 million in IMAX revenue.
Nolan’s ultra-high-resolution IMAX 70mm presentation has also generated considerable attention. It contributed 12% of the film’s total IMAX box office despite being available at only 41 locations worldwide, encouraging some viewers to travel long distances for the format.
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day joining the IMAX schedule, the premium format looks set to remain a powerful way for cinemas to turn major releases into shared events.
