Machine Party is the latest game from Mike Klubnika, the creator of 2023’s breakout dark comedy horror game Machine Party. Instead of leaving cartoon mishaps to the imagination, this multiplayer collection makes the consequences of losing considerably more final.
Up to four players can compete across more than a dozen strange trials, scrambling, crawling, building and even smoking their way through a series of hostile party challenges. Some games allow everyone to survive, including a narrow minefield that rewards careful movement. Most, however, turn the group against itself.
A party game with very bleak consequences
Players may race to stay upright on an out-of-control escalator or assemble an oversized ACME-style weapon before their rivals can finish theirs. Other events involve drones punishing failed art projects, a robot spider delivering brutal chiropractic treatment and increasingly unpleasant tests of timing and nerve.
One particularly memorable challenge involves eating green peas as quickly as possible, with the frantic performance resembling something like a hungry duck. A cigarette-smoking contest is another standout, continuing the oddly specific tradition of cigarette-based game mechanics.
From Buckshot Roulette to Machine Party
Klubnika’s work has long explored compact, unsettling forms of body horror. His catalogue includes several smaller horror games, including the Ballardian garage nightmare Fused 240. His biggest success arrived with Buckshot Roulette, a Russian roulette-inspired game in which players manipulate items and probabilities while facing a grinning opponent.
That game became one of Steam’s highest-selling releases of its year, and a multiplayer mode was added soon afterwards. Machine Party carries the same cruel sense of humour into a larger collection of multiplayer contests, replacing a single deadly table with a whole series of grimly inventive arenas.
