The Elder Scrolls Online will continue receiving updates, but several major additions have been postponed following substantial layoffs at ZeniMax Online Studios. The cuts affected developers and senior studio leadership, and the revised roadmap moves a long-requested Warden class overhaul into 2027.

Game director and studio head Nick Giacomini outlined the changes in a new blog post published on July 30. He said the delays were intended to give the teams enough time to complete complex work properly rather than force releases against earlier deadlines.

Three major 2026 releases have moved

Content originally scheduled for 2026 has been pushed back in three key areas:

  • Crimson Veldt: a new trial designed for PvE endgame players.
  • Class and Combat Refresh: a broad update intended to improve the game’s classes and combat systems.
  • Update 52: now planned for January 2027, bringing a PvP zone and the Rimegales Skyrim Dynamic Encounters.

The announcement follows a series of organisational changes and staff departures at the studio earlier in July. Giacomini presented the revised schedule as a quality decision, explaining that the Class and Combat Refresh and Crimson Veldt trial are particularly complicated projects that need additional development time.

Warden players face a longer wait

The Warden overhaul is one of the most closely watched changes among players. Its delay is especially unwelcome while sections of the community believe the game’s current competitive and character-building meta has become stagnant.

The shift also adds to frustration around ESO’s move towards seasonal content instead of a roadmap centred on large expansions. One fan on the subreddit described the reduced flow of content as harsher than expected, while another said the layoffs had made delays foreseeable.

Community manager Kevin Gbolie said the Warden work remains a high priority. He also indicated that the team is investigating a smaller interim class update, although no such release has been confirmed.

Studio says development continues

Despite the leadership departures and wider cuts, the team has stated that its current size is comparable to the group that delivered the well-regarded Wrothgar and Summerset expansions.

Bethesda has also said it will work more closely with ZeniMax Online on forthcoming The Elder Scrolls projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI. That announcement prompted speculation that the studio could become primarily a support team, but Giacomini rejected that interpretation.

He described the studio’s 12-year history as one that has included setbacks handled collectively, and said its goal is to continue expanding The Elder Scrolls Online rather than simply maintain it.
