Pokémon TCG artist Tayu brings embroidery to Delta Reign

Pokémon Trading Card Game collectors are used to seeing cards illustrated with clay, yarn and other tactile techniques. Delta Reign introduces another artist to that creative tradition: Tayu, whose first official Pokémon card uses embroidery.

Tayu’s first Pokémon TCG card

Tayu’s debut arrives on November 6, when the Rayquaza-themed Delta Reign expansion launches alongside the Pokémon TCG 30th anniversary collection. The artist is not entirely new to Pokémon fans, however.

Those who followed the 2024 Pokémon illustration contest may remember Tayu as a runner-up. Kazuki Minami won the grand prize with an illustration of a yawning Pikachu, while Tayu submitted an embroidered Feraligatr. The Water-type starter was shown swimming towards rays of light at dusk.

Two years later, Tayu returns to the TCG with an embroidered female Nidoran card. The artwork may not depict a powerful card or guarantee a significant resale price, but its unusual handmade appearance makes it one of the set’s most memorable illustrations. Collectors are likely to pay particular attention to the reverse holofoil version.

An embroidered Pokémon artwork with room to grow

Nidoran may be Tayu’s first released card, but the artist has already demonstrated a wider interest in embroidered Pokémon. Tayu also entered embroidered Eevee and Flygon illustrations in the 2024 competition, although neither entry placed.

That history suggests Nidoran could be the beginning of a longer run of Pokémon TCG work. Its distinctive texture also gives collectors another reason to look beyond competitive strength and secondary-market value when choosing cards.

Delta Reign is building a strong artist roster

Recent leaks of cards for Delta Reign point to a particularly strong release. Established TCG artists including Jerky, Shinji Kanda and Akira Egawa are represented in the verdant-themed set.

The secret rare illustration cards are another major draw, with Pokémon such as Growlithe, Groudon and Kecleon receiving standout treatments. Against that already impressive line-up, Tayu’s embroidered Nidoran still manages to look entirely different.
