Sony says it will continue with its plan to stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs from 2028, despite sustained criticism from players who want to keep buying boxed games.

During Sony’s latest earnings call on July 31, chief financial officer Lin Tao said the company understands the strength of those feelings. However, she also made clear that the transition towards an all-digital PlayStation ecosystem will proceed.

Why Sony is moving away from discs

Tao said the main reason is the broader shift towards digital content. In her view, this change is affecting more than PlayStation: digital distribution is advancing across the entertainment industry.

“We put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward.”

She added that Sony has heard the community’s response and recognises that games carry strong emotional value, including connections to people’s memories. The company says it will continue considering those feelings while exploring how to engage players within a future digital ecosystem.

For Australian collectors and players who value ownership, boxed releases remain an important part of gaming culture. The same interest in tangible hardware and preservation can be seen across the RETROCADE arcade blog, from classic software discussions to the practical realities of maintaining older machines.

Players plan a PlayStation blackout

Some players are organising a week-long PlayStation blackout in mid-August as an initial boycott. Physical-game advocate DoesItPlay said the proposed action follows several community complaints, including the closure of Bluepoint, Sony’s live-service strategy, the cancellation of fan events, the perceived neglect of PS VR2 and the lack of returning franchises that players want to see.

DoesItPlay described the planned end of physical discs in 2028 as “the last straw”. A public post documenting Sony’s response to the backlash is available as video footage of the comments, published on July 31, 2026.

How Sony says retail can adapt

An investment analyst asked how removing discs could affect Sony’s relationship with retailers and how future PlayStation hardware would stand apart from gaming PCs if both platforms became digital-only.

Tao responded that regional differences would require detailed discussions with individual retail partners. She also said publishers could continue selling empty boxes containing download codes in markets such as North America, giving stores a physical product to stock without including a game disc.

PlayStation’s proposed advantages over PC

Sony does not believe a disc drive is a major point of difference between PlayStation and PC. Tao highlighted PlayStation’s curated content, stable gaming environment and lower price compared with a high-end gaming PC.

She said the company sees different ways of playing on PC and PlayStation, and believes the two platforms can coexist. For players who prefer dedicated, physical entertainment hardware, an arcade machine buying guide can help compare the long-term appeal of a home arcade setup with increasingly digital console ownership.

Those considering a more traditional gaming room may also want to explore upright arcades, bartop arcades or arcade repair and maintenance services.
