Deltarune’s latest update brings Chapter 5’s development to a close while giving players more control over its demanding optional boss battle. Version 0.0.253 is the final planned patch for the chapter, with development now moving to what comes next.

The full patch notes were released on July 30 through the official Deltarune X account. Most of the changes fix bugs from earlier chapters, but the significant addition is found in Chapter 5.

Each Deltarune chapter has included an optional Shadow Crystal boss encounter. Chapter 5’s opponent is Pink, the final Shadow Crystal boss in the game, and the fight is designed to test highly practised players. After losing to Pink once, players can now interact with a Pink Bomb outside the arena to select one of two new settings.

Two ways to adjust Pink’s battle

  • Nicer: Adds an indicator showing where explosions will land and gives bombs an extra one-sixth of a second before detonating.
  • Meaner: Raises Pink’s damage by 25% and slightly increases the speed of some attacks.

Both modes also activate the bomb explosion hitbox one frame later. The update’s patch note encourages players to attempt the tougher option with the line, “Girls like it when you are better at dodging danmaku.”

A playful reward for the harder setting

Defeating Pink on “Meaner” provides a reward, although it is not a conventional power-up or equipment upgrade. In the post-battle scene, Pink plants numerous kisses on Kris, the game’s protagonist. The available information indicates that the difficulty choice does not otherwise create a meaningful change to the playthrough or ending scene.

For readers who enjoy seeing how games present difficult encounters, the update is a reminder that challenge design can be adjusted without removing an optional fight entirely. Chapter 6 is next

Toby Fox has confirmed that there are no further Chapter 5 updates planned. Development will now focus on Chapter 6, which is the penultimate chapter of Deltarune’s continuing story. Chapter 6 is currently planned for release in 2027.
