Spoilers for Batman: Caped Crusader season 2, episode 4.
Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 refreshes familiar enemies such as the Riddler, the Joker and Scarecrow, while also introducing the first screen adaptation of one of Batman’s more unusual foes: Barbatos. The series’ version is very different from the supernatural threat seen in DC Comics.
Barbatos in Batman: Caped Crusader
In “The Devil’s Due”, Batman becomes the suspect in a murder investigation after a burglar is killed and a bat symbol is painted in blood at the crime scene. The real perpetrators are a cult that believes a demon bat god named Barbatos lies dormant beneath Gotham.
The group thinks that offering enough blood and stolen treasure will awaken Barbatos. In return, they expect him to destroy everyone who rejects him and reward his followers with enormous wealth. The cult members wear Batman-like costumes and see the Caped Crusader as Barbatos’ earthly avatar.
That frightening mythology turns out to be a con. Barbatos does not exist in this version of the story; he is an invented legend created by a fraudulent cult leader who wants to collect the valuables stolen by his followers. The leader is careless enough to explain the scheme to Batman while a genuine believer is listening. She responds by stabbing him to death for denying the demon’s existence.
It is a grounded mystery rather than the kind of supernatural threat often associated with arcade and gaming stories, but the comics give Barbatos a far more dangerous history.
Barbatos in DC Comics
The name Barbatos originates in 16th-century mystical texts, where it appears among lists of spirits or demons that could supposedly be summoned by a sorcerer. The name has also appeared in several Shin Megami Tensei games and in Genshin Impact.
DC first used the character in Peter Milligan and Kieron Dwyer’s 1990 story “Dark Knight, Dark City”. There, the entity was called Barbathos. A group of occultists, including Thomas Jefferson, summoned him in 1765. Gotham City was later built above the temple where the ritual occurred, and Barbathos claimed that he created Batman as part of a plan to secure his eventual release.
Grant Morrison later used the Barbatos name for a dark force created by Darkseid. Scott Snyder subsequently made Barbatos the central villain of the 2017 crossover Dark Nights: Metal.
Snyder’s version shares one broad idea with the television episode: Barbatos has a cult operating in Gotham. The comics’ followers, however, are the Court of Owls, a secret society drawn from the city’s wealthy elite rather than a band of easily manipulated thieves.
This Barbatos is an ancient power intent on destroying the Multiverse. He sends corrupted alternate versions of Batman to Earth, including the Batman-Joker amalgamation known as the Batman Who Laughs. He also says that he shaped Bruce Wayne’s life to guarantee his transformation into Batman, with some of the dark worlds he recruits created from Bruce’s own fears.
Barbatos in Gotham Nocturne
Barbatos appears again in the 2023 gothic opera comic series Gotham Nocturne by Ram V and Rafael Albuquerque. In that story, Batman is possessed by a demon called an Azmer. Barbatos helps him resist the possession, but the assistance comes during a mythic desert journey where Batman rejects offers of power and chooses to confront his battles independently.
Why the adaptation changes Barbatos
Batman: Caped Crusader has made reinvention one of its defining ideas. The series turns the Mad Hatter into a talk-show host and presents Harley Quinn separately from the Joker. Treating Barbatos as a fabricated urban legend continues that approach, giving the character a role that suits the show’s crime-focused version of Gotham.
Other adaptations may eventually explore the character’s stranger occult and multiversal possibilities.
