Mahershala Ali says Marvel’s long-delayed Blade film is no longer his project. The actor remains open about what went wrong, but has made it clear he has moved on from the role of Marvel’s vampire hunter.
Ali’s casting was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 and was widely welcomed. His work in Luke Cage, True Detective, the Hunger Games films and Battle Angel Alita made him a strong fit for the character. However, repeated delays, creative changes and director departures steadily undermined the production.
In a new interview with GQ, Ali said the film could still exist in some form, but not with him attached. He explained that he had been under contract and that, if Marvel had truly wanted to make the film, it would have happened. Since that did not occur, he said he had to move forward.
Why Mahershala Ali left Blade behind
Ali also described the collapse of Blade as the reason he was able to develop his next project with filmmaker Bassam Tariq. Training he had completed for the superhero film informed that work, giving him a sense of creative closure. He added that he was ready to stop answering questions about Blade, arguing that Marvel should explain why it failed to reach production.
Ali’s position is straightforward: Marvel had the contract, the resources and the opportunity to make the film. Since it chose not to get it over the line, he no longer feels responsible for explaining the project’s fate.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige accepted some responsibility during a July appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He said he felt like a “gigantic loser and failure” because the studio could not get a Mahershala Ali-led Blade off the ground.
The production’s difficulties became public in 2022, when Bassam Tariq left as director. Yann Demange later became the second director to depart, in 2024. Reports also described extensive script problems and repeated rewrites. At one stage, Ali’s Blade was reportedly reduced to a minor supporting presence in his own film.
Marvel’s decision to bring Wesley Snipes back as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine added another complication. That appearance did not necessarily end Ali’s version, but it made the future of the newer interpretation look even less certain.
There is still a separate Blade video game associated with Arkane Studios. Its future is unclear while Arkane faces the possibility of being spun off or closed, amid Xbox’s wider programme of developer layoffs.

Ali, meanwhile, has continued working with Tariq on the action drama Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The film features Ali wielding a sword, an image that may feel like an unintended farewell to the role he spent more than a year preparing to play.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is scheduled to arrive in select cinemas on September 25.
