The 1990s brought a second wave of optical technology to amusement arcades. After the costly LaserDisc failures of the early 1980s, operators were asked to back interactive films, light-gun shooters, simulators and CD-ROM systems once again. This retrospective follows how LaserDisc and CD technology briefly reshaped coin-op—and why both eventually gave way to hard drives and solid-state storage.

LaserDisc returns to the arcade

By the end of the 1980s, many amusement executives were relatively new to the industry. Innovation remained important, while computer-generated graphics were becoming more attractive and home gaming was drawing players away from arcades. Operators wanted spectacle, but the cost of new hardware was a serious concern. Although the first LaserDisc boom had collapsed, the format had matured enough for a new attempt.

Some earlier projects were already fading. Universal in Japan presented Captain Zapp in 1985 as a possible release for its Universal System 1 platform, but the production game never appeared and the arcade company soon collapsed. Data East made only three LaserDisc games, with 1985’s Road Blaster becoming its final entry. The format seemed finished—until American Laser Games arrived.

Mad Dog McCree changes the conversation

American Laser Games (ALG) grew from a company with experience creating commercial police-training systems for combat shooting. That background led to Mad Dog McCree, a cowboy film-game released in 1990. Its Sony LDP-1450 LaserDisc player worked with a Commodore Amiga 500 motherboard, the same computer used by Arcadia Systems in some earlier non-LaserDisc machines. Most importantly, ALG built the experience around a light gun rather than relying primarily on a joystick.

The production did not have the huge budget associated with earlier LaserDisc films, but its accessible Western theme and shooting mechanics proved compelling. By 1991, the cabinet was topping the Replay arcade charts and ALG was reportedly selling 100 units per month. That success convinced the amusement industry that LaserDisc games might have a future after all.

An idea with roots before LaserDisc

Film-based shooting games were not new. Nintendo entered amusement with Wild Gunman in Japan in 1973, with the machine licensed to SEGA for Western distribution. A 16mm projector displayed filmed sequences, while players used a light gun to shoot at the correct moments. Its scene transitions and timed actions anticipated the quick-time-event structure later associated with LaserDisc games.

The cabinet was enormous, and its cinefilm mechanism was temperamental, limiting its commercial impact. Kasco explored a related idea in 1978 with The Driver, a driving cabinet in which players tried to match pre-recorded wild driving footage to earn points. These machines were ambitious demonstrations of interactive film, but the technology was not yet robust enough for widespread amusement use.

SEGA experiments with pseudo-holograms

ALG’s revival attracted attention in Japan, where CAPCOM distributed Mad Dog McCree. SEGA responded in 1991 with Time Traveler, developed with Rick Dyer, the creator of Dragon’s Lair, Space Ace and Thayer’s Quest. SEGA promoted it as the world’s first three-dimensional holographic video game.

The cabinet did not use a true holographic display. Instead, a television projection and spherical mirror created a Pepper’s Ghost-style pseudo-hologram, appearing in a semicircle ahead of the controls without glasses. Digitised actors presented a quick-time adventure in which players guided a time-travelling cowboy. The unusual hardware attracted strong sales, but reliability problems echoed the failures of the earlier LaserDisc era. SEGA followed with Holosseum in 1992, an attempt to apply the cabinet to the fighting-game market.

LaserDisc becomes a simulator platform

SEGA’s AM5 team continued exploring LaserDisc for large-scale attractions. Its EN-JOINT SPACE range included the AS-1, an eight-passenger interactive simulator. In 1993, SEGA partnered with Michael Jackson on AS-1: Scramble Training. LaserDisc supplied the computer-generated space-battle footage, while onboard hardware handled player shots and attacking enemies. Three experiences were produced for the simulator, although distribution outside Japan was limited. The original footage of Jackson guiding users was later rediscovered.

TAITO pursued a similar direction with D3BOS, or Dynamic Direct Dimension Burst Out System, launched in 1991—two years before SEGA’s AS-1. Positioned as an answer to SEGA’s R360, D3BOS carried two riders in a fully enclosed cabin with 360-degree gyroscopic motion. LaserDisc-powered film rides included four different experiences.

TAITO followed with the two-person IDYA motion pod in 1992 and Super D3BOS in 1993. One D3BOS experience, Pyramid Patrol by HighTech Lab, was later adapted for the SEGA Mega-CD and Pioneer LaserActive. A D3BOS unit was eventually found in a warehouse, although restoring it would likely require specialist knowledge from an original TAITO engineer.

ALG moves from LaserDisc to CD-ROM

ALG also responded to operator concerns about its bulky rear-projection pedestal cabinet. In 1992, the company introduced a more conventional 25-inch “space saver” upright. With Atari Games acting as a licensing partner, ALG released Who Shot Johnny Rock and Space Pirates before returning to the successful Western formula with Mad Dog II – The Lost Gold. The sequel appeared in a large standard cabinet and as an upgrade kit for original Mad Dog McCree machines.

The more affordable alternative was CD-ROM. Sony and Philips had finalised the format in 1984, but inexpensive CD-ROM drives did not become practical for amusement until the 1990s. They offered digital storage, fast access to full-motion video and a smaller, potentially cheaper platform. ALG licensed Panasonic’s 3DO hardware for coin-op use and found another hit with Crime Patrol in 1993, a live-action police shooter reflecting the company’s training-system origins.

The wider CD gaming race

Arcades were not the only market interested in optical digital storage. NEC added a CD system to the Japanese PC Engine in 1988. Philips introduced the CD-i, while Nintendo explored partnerships with Philips and later Sony; the failed Nintendo-Sony arrangement ultimately contributed to the creation of PlayStation. SEGA released the Mega Drive/Sega CD in 1992. Atari’s Jaguar CD arrived in late 1995, close to the launches of the Saturn and PlayStation. The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer also launched in 1993 through licensees including Panasonic, Goldstar and Sanyo, while the PC release of Myst helped raise interest in CD-based software.

The 3DO hardware did not fulfil its wider arcade ambitions beyond ALG. Panasonic’s planned M2 successor never became a consumer console, but KONAMI licensed it as arcade hardware in 1997 and used it for approximately five coin-op titles. By then, its CD drive mainly stored content for computer-generated games.

ALG released nine movie-game shooters and numerous home conversions. The 1994 title Fast Draw Showdown became one of the year’s most popular games. ALG left the coin-op market in 1995 to concentrate on console and PC content, continuing until the company closed in 2018 and its rights were sold. Global VR revived Fast Draw Showdown in 2002 using a PC hard drive rather than optical media.

Galaxian 3 reaches LaserDisc’s scale limit

In 1993, NAMCO produced one of the final major LaserDisc amusement applications. Originally created as a Wonder Egg theme-park attraction, Galaxian 3 – Theater 6 placed six seated players in front of an 18-foot screen. Two projectors were paired with Pioneer LD-V8000 players. The game, Project Dragoon, combined pre-recorded space-battle footage with real-time computer-generated enemies, lasers and explosions.

The result was effectively a giant multiplayer interpretation of NAMCO’s Starblade, with its own distinctive presentation and setup. It worked well and proved popular, but the machine was described as the world’s largest video game and cost about $150,000 in 1993. Its size, price and space requirements restricted it largely to flagship venues and theme parks. Attack of the Zolgear followed in 1994, but Galaxian 3 marked both the high point and the end of mainstream LaserDisc amusement products.

From optical media to hard drives

Western arcades moved away from LaserDisc, although Japan found a second life for the format in karaoke and jukebox systems. Companies including Pioneer, SEGA and TAITO continued selling LaserKaraoke equipment for bars and restaurants into the mid-2000s.

CD-ROM remained useful for storing game content, but its arcade role was also brief. Increasing capacity and performance encouraged manufacturers to move from ROM-based JAMMA boards to dedicated PC hardware and hard drives. By 1995, texture-mapped polygon graphics had displaced much of the “multimedia” and live-action appeal, while Sony’s CD-based PlayStation became the dominant force in home gaming. FMV software existed on the console, but it was not the main driver of its success.

SEGA made one later optical experiment with GD-ROM in 1998. Developed with Yamaha for the Dreamcast and NAOMI arcade board, Gigabyte Disc Read-Only Memory offered more capacity than a CD, simplified game swapping and attempted to address CD piracy. The proprietary format was still affected by piracy and mechanical reliability issues. The final GD-ROM releases arrived with NAOMI 2 in 2006, followed by a short-lived use of HD-DVD drives in some SEGA PC-based arcade systems.

Arcade storage has moved through ROM chips, bubble memory, LaserDisc, CD-ROM, DVD, hard drives and solid-state memory. Cloud storage and decentralised networks have also been proposed as future directions. The recurring cycle—from 1973 to 1983, 1993 and beyond—shows that new media can transform the arcade, but only when reliability, cost and compelling play align.

What this means for modern arcade owners

These machines remain valuable reminders that arcade design is a balance between spectacle and serviceability.
