LAI Games and Wahlap are preparing a virtual-reality edition of Asphalt 9 Legends Arcade, expanding the existing arcade racing range with a new cabinet and an exclusive game mode.
The original Asphalt 9 Legends Arcade became one of the arcade sector’s notable post-lockdown releases. It arrived during a period of inflation, higher production costs and freight complications, all of which contributed to price increases. Despite those challenges, the game reportedly sold strongly and has become relatively common in family entertainment centres.
VR edition headed for Bowl Expo
The VR model was first shown as a prototype at IAAPA 2022. Following testing and adjustments, the production version was expected to begin shipping around International Bowl Expo 2023 event in Orlando, Florida.
The wider Expo began on 25 June, while the trade-show section ran from 28 to 29 June. Units were scheduled to become available from the trade-show period, with pre-orders already open before the event.
Updated cabinet design
LAI has listed the game on their website, including its principal features. One practical revision is the removal of the small secondary dashboard monitor. Since the player cannot see that display while wearing the VR headset, it has been replaced with a face-mask dispenser.
The cabinet has also received a more elaborate visual treatment, a smaller overall profile, a reshaped front windscreen and an LED wheel at the rear, along with other cosmetic changes. The IAAPA machine represented the Chinese build, so the production version shown for Western markets has been adapted accordingly.

HP Reverb G2 headset
LAI describes the headset as a premium VR unit without naming it on the game listing. The hardware used is an HP Reverb G2, a headset that has become an increasingly familiar choice for arcade VR installations.
Exclusive Hunted mode
The VR edition also introduces Hunted, a game mode not included in the other Asphalt 9 Legends Arcade models. It places the player in a police pursuit, requiring them to stay ahead of “SECURITY” and avoid being caught.
With four game modes in total, this version is positioned as the most complete edition of the arcade racer. Venue owners assessing a new arcade machine purchase will need to weigh the VR hardware and twin-cabinet option against their available floor space.
Shipping timetable
Pre-orders could be placed ahead of launch, although regular shipments were not expected until the Bowl Expo period. A small number of exceptions may have involved test units, meaning some players could encounter the machine earlier. Wider placement in interested family entertainment centres was expected from July.
