Sega Amusements has officially announced Apex Rebels, a new motion-based arcade racing game scheduled for its global debut at IAAPA 2023. The title will be shown from 14 to 17 November at booth 1006 inside the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.
The game had previously appeared in location testing in the United Kingdom, but the production cabinet reveals a substantial hardware change from the test unit. For Australian operators and enthusiasts following the latest arcade industry news, Apex Rebels is one of Sega Amusements’ most ambitious new racers.
The Apex Rebels cabinet
The IAAPA model uses a large 65-inch LED display rather than the 43- or 47-inch screens seen on the test version. Above the main screen is a panoramic LED video billboard displaying the leaderboard and track map, giving spectators more reason to follow each race.

The cabinet combines a pneumatic motion base with force-feedback steering, a camera and illuminated translucent seat mouldings in four colours. Up to four units can be linked for multiplayer competition. The angular side sections also appear to house the speakers.
Its visual design sits somewhere between the presentation of Need for Speed and Fast & Furious arcade racers, while adding its own lighting, bodywork and race-livery details. Sega describes the cabinet as a centrepiece intended to attract both players and onlookers.
A price was not available at the time of the announcement. The IAAPA display will feature the 65-inch version. Sega Amusements’ website also referenced a 49-inch model, which may be a future option based on the smaller test cabinet rather than a version shown at the event.
How the racing system works
Apex Rebels offers five race cars and is designed for both casual players and experienced racers. An adaptive difficulty system is intended to make the game approachable while retaining more demanding challenges for returning players.
At the beginning of a race, players pass through one of three checkpoints. That choice determines a route suited to their driving style. Progressing through later checkpoints can provide speed boosts and unlock techniques including Slipstream, Power Drift and Aero-Drift.
Aero-Drift is the game’s signature mechanic. It lifts the car while cornering, allowing players to take turns at higher speed and overtake rivals. The system adds another layer of decision-making beyond conventional gear changes, particularly when combined with slipstream boosts and aggressive racing lines.

The game is being developed for Sega Amusements by 3MindWave, the studio previously responsible for ATV Slam. Apex Rebels runs on Unreal Engine 5 and is presented as a high-end visual experience, with the supplied material indicating a target of 4K resolution at 60 frames per second.

Built for competitive locations
The linked four-player format, motion platform, force feedback and prominent billboard are all aimed at social racing. Those features should help the game work as both a playable attraction and a spectator-friendly centrepiece in arcades, family entertainment centres and other entertainment venues.
Sega Amusements stated that Apex Rebels had been performing strongly in location testing and claimed it was outperforming its nearest rivals by a healthy margin. No supporting figures were included with the announcement, so the claim will need to be assessed against wider operator results.
Where Apex Rebels fits in Sega’s line-up
The announcement adds another major racing title to Sega Amusements’ portfolio. The company had already launched Storm Rider 2 and Drone Racing Genesis earlier in the year, while Hyper Cross was also expected to appear at IAAPA alongside Apex Rebels. The two newer titles might not begin shipping until early 2024.
For readers comparing the format with other driving attractions, RETROCADE’s racing arcade collection provides a useful starting point, while the arcade machine buying guide covers the broader considerations involved in choosing a cabinet.
Apex Rebels’ most distinctive feature is likely to be Aero-Drift. Its success will depend on how naturally the mechanic integrates with the handling model, and whether the motion hardware makes repeat play more compelling for both casual visitors and regular racers.
For home users researching available formats, arcade machines and upright arcades offer a broader look at cabinet styles, although Apex Rebels is designed primarily as a commercial location game.
