Raw Thrills used Amusement Expo 2024 to announce a wider industry release for Marvel: Contest of Champions Arcade, a game previously exclusive to Dave & Busters since its 2019 release.
Marvel: Contest of Champions Arcade Moves Into Wider Release
The arcade fighter first appeared at Dave & Busters locations around five years ago. It adapts the 2014 mobile game into a physical arcade experience, combining hands-on controls with collectible cards.
The concept has similarities to Raw Thrills’ Injustice Arcade, although this machine uses Marvel characters and adds a joystick to the control layout. For operators considering new arcade machines, the broader release makes the cabinet a more widely accessible option than it was during its exclusive period.
The production cabinet is not identical to the Dave & Busters version. Changes include revised branding without the Dave & Busters logo, removal of the Captain Marvel topper and a smaller screen.
Why Has the Exclusive Window Lasted So Long?
A five-year exclusivity period is unusually long for an arcade chain arrangement, where windows are often around six months or less. The explanation is contractual. Whatever the reason for the delay, the title is now moving beyond its original venue partner.
There does not appear to be a major gameplay change in the wider-release version. The joystick seems most useful for blocking, while the game’s design encourages players to join the action and produce very quick fights.
The cabinet also shares its form factor with the two-player Minecraft Dungeons Arcade machine, although the two titles use different artwork and controls. That may make the cabinet format relevant to operators comparing different upright arcade layouts.
Marvel: Contest of Champions Collectible Cards
Details about the card programme remain limited, but Series 1 is known and the cabinet refers to Series 2 becoming available. A potential Series 3 will likely depend on how well the game performs with the wider market.
The existing cards should continue to work with the cabinets, meaning the card system is not restricted to a single machine version.
Release Status
Marvel: Contest of Champions Arcade was not available at the time of the announcement. Further information was expected within roughly the following month. The title’s move beyond Dave & Busters gives arcade operators another Marvel-based fighting game to consider, subject to release and ordering details.
