Location Watch October 2024: New Arcades Celebrate Grand Openings

Arcade venues continue to open, relocate and reinvent themselves despite difficult trading conditions. This October roundup spans North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania, from focused retro rooms and barcades to large family entertainment centres.

Some operators are reporting weaker earnings, while others have closed, but the latest openings show that dedicated arcade businesses are still finding audiences. For Australian readers, the Adelaide launch of Paradigm Zone is a particularly notable local development.

North America

Hometown Arcade NJ — Bloomfield, New Jersey

Hometown Arcade NJ brings a distinctly local feel to Bloomfield, with a small console lounge alongside a floor packed with classic video games. The line-up includes Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Final Lap, Frogger, several Pac-Man titles, Q*Bert and Space Invaders.

There is also a strong 1990s selection, including NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, Revolution X, Tekken 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Pinball extends beyond the classic era with tables such as The Godfather, John Wick and Stranger Things. Bloomfield is the company’s second venue after Norwood, Massachusetts. Fun Spot Arcade — Trumbull, Connecticut

CEC Entertainment has introduced a more game-centred concept with Fun Spot Arcade in Trumbull. Although the name may cause confusion with FunSpot in New Hampshire, the format recalls the period when Chuck E. Cheese venues placed greater emphasis on arcade games rather than a broader family entertainment mix.

Pixel Palace Arcade and Bar — Round Rock, Texas

Pixel Palace leans heavily into 1980s arcade culture, combining a bar setting with a substantial collection of period video games and pinball machines. Its advertised games include OutRun, Punch-Out, Track & Field, Turbo, Karate Champ, Tapper, Gauntlet, Galaxian and Galaga. Later additions include both video and pinball versions of Street Fighter II. The venue also maintains a Facebook page.

Time Rift Arcade — Bedford, Texas

Retro-gaming personality The 8-Bit Guy helped bring attention to Time Rift Arcade, a free-play venue in the Dallas suburb of Bedford. Alcohol is available, although the space does not follow the conventional barcade layout. Its collection mixes newer and older attractions, placing Golden Tee near Atari Assault and Sega’s Zaxxon. Clarksville Corner Arcade — Clarksville, Texas

Attached to an independent pizza restaurant that has operated since May 2023, Clarksville Corner Arcade adds a small arcade offer to the town’s downtown area. Early images show one Dirty Drivin’ cabinet and one Super Bikes 2 machine, both increasingly uncommon sights in modern venues.

Offworld Arcade — Detroit, Michigan

Offworld Arcade has moved to a new Detroit location, bringing classic video games and pinball together in a polished venue. The operator makes clear that it is not a museum, while the presentation also gives the machines an art-gallery quality: each cabinet is both playable entertainment and a piece of interactive design.

Fun Unlimited Arcade — Ogden, Utah

Fun Unlimited’s new arcade occupies the company’s former game-store premises in Newgate Mall. The store moved into another space after a change of ownership, while the previous shop was converted into an arcade. A boxing machine and pinball table sit near the front, and a former party room is being used for storage.

The game floor contains a mixture of older and newer machines, as well as two Skeeball lanes. The narrow layout can feel crowded around larger modern cabinets, and several machines were out of service during the visit. There was no attendant present. Yume Arcade — Ontario, Canada

Yume Arcade describes itself as Ontario’s first import arcade. It features the rhythm-game staples expected from this type of venue, alongside less common Western releases such as Sega’s Kancolle Arcade. The venue attracted strong interest soon after opening.

North American family entertainment updates

• Dave & Buster’s opened in Lombard, Illinois.
• The Daytona, Florida venue was revamped.
• A former Round1 in Peoria, Illinois, became a Tilted 10.
• GENDA completed its sale of NEN and outlined plans for further arcades.
• Betson installed equipment at Cloud Peak Lanes in Sheridan, Wyoming, and reopened Pizza Ranch FunZone in Iowa.

NQ64 — Leeds, United Kingdom

NQ64 added a Leeds venue to its UK retro-barcade chain in late August. The company has recently concentrated more on repeat visits, events and attractions such as laser tag, but the new site joins an already competitive local market that includes Arcade Club.

Sega Prize Zone — Aldershot, United Kingdom

Sega Amusements and Superbowl UK continue to expand their partnership with a new Sega Prize Zone in Aldershot, near London. The venue followed its announcement by only a couple of months and includes Sega attractions such as Mission: Impossible and Daytona.

Electric Social — Berlin, Germany

Berlin’s Electric Social reflects the growing European social-entertainment trend, combining arcade play, food and drinks in a large venue near Alexanderplatz. It has been described as Berlin’s biggest arcade and represents the newer generation of locations emerging as pandemic restrictions eased.

Levels — Prague, Czech Republic

Levels in Prague expands the arcade-bar concept with a broader mix of activities. Alongside its arcade and themed bars, the venue offers billiards, karaoke and mini golf, creating a multi-activity destination rather than a games-only site.

European family entertainment updates

• Bandai Namco Amusement Europe supplied specially branded carnival games to Swingers London.
• Lane7 opened its UK flagship in Camden with another Pump It Up Phoenix.
• Hollywood Bowl reopened its Tunbridge Wells venue.
• Butlins began PlayXperience centres featuring simulators.
• Fire & Ice opened in Newport, Wales, with a barcade area.
• GENDA established Genda Europe in the UK for future expansion.
• Planet Play Malta adopted a Sennox management system.

Asia, the Middle East and Oceania

GiGO Main Store Dotonbori — Osaka, Japan

GiGO has opened another major Japanese flagship in Dotonbori, Osaka, following its large Ikebukuro store launched in September 2023. The Osaka site is near the former Club Sega location and devotes its first two floors largely to crane games.

The upper floor offers rhythm games, racing titles, battlers and other attractions, including a prominent display of the company’s Breaking Down punching machines. GiGO has also opened venues at Sannomiya Kitaguchi and Hiroshima Alpark, both retaining a meaningful selection beyond crane games.

TimeZone — Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

TimeZone has expanded in Vietnam with two additional Ho Chi Minh City venues. The largest is located at Parc Mall in District 8, continuing the recent growth of arcade operators in the country.

Paradigm Zone — Adelaide, South Australia

Paradigm Zone is a new Adelaide venue founded by a 19-year-old entrepreneur. Its design follows the crane-heavy, futuristic entertainment-centre model that has developed in China, while offering considerably more than prize machines.

The venue includes rhythm games on cabinets from Konami and Sega, karaoke, photo booths, VR simulators and a large light-matrix game room. For Australian operators and enthusiasts, it is a useful example of how arcade entertainment can combine video games with social and immersive activities.
