DreamWorks Kung Fu Panda: The Warrior’s Gauntlet is a new location-based VR arcade game from Utah developer Night Heron Entertainment. After a limited test appearance, the title has now been formally announced ahead of its IAAPA 2024 debut.

Kung Fu Panda Enters VR Arcades

This is not the first arcade release based on the Kung Fu Panda franchise. The earlier arcade title was a videmption game, while The Warrior’s Gauntlet uses virtual reality and physical effects to place players inside Po’s world.

Night Heron Entertainment has developed the game for its Lynx VR platform. The company is headquartered in American Fork, Utah, and has more than a decade of experience developing immersive entertainment, amusement products, games and software.

The Lynx VR Cabinet

The game is delivered in Night Heron’s Lynx cabinet, a platform designed to host VR arcade experiences. An 80-inch display lets spectators follow the action, while the player wears an HTC Focus 3 headset connected to the cabinet by a steel cord.

A haptic floor adds physical feedback as players fight their way through the game. The cabinet is approximately seven feet deep, with enough space for one person to play comfortably.

The cabinet’s large footprint makes it more suited to a commercial arcade, family entertainment centre or other venue than a typical home setup. Operators comparing formats can explore RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide before assessing their available floor space.

Test performance figures have not been announced. One test location was Fat Cats in Saratoga Springs, Utah, which is described as one of that chain’s best-performing venues. More information about the venue is available from Fat Cats.

How The Warrior’s Gauntlet Plays

Players do not take the role of Po directly. Instead, Po guides them as one of his students through a series of short challenges. Each session lasts approximately two to three minutes, with the overall goal of earning the title of Kung Fu Master.

The footage and promotional material show a detailed visual presentation, although Night Heron has not confirmed whether the game runs on an established engine such as Unreal or on proprietary technology.

IAAPA 2024 Debut And Release Plans

DreamWorks Kung Fu Panda: The Warrior’s Gauntlet was scheduled to become fully playable for the first time at IAAPA Expo 2024 in Orlando, Florida, beginning on November 18, 2024. The game was presented at the AVS Companies booth, number 1617.

AVS Companies is the product’s official distributor and planned to lead commercial distribution across North America. The distributor, founded in Chicago in 1971 and headquartered in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, supplies amusement, gaming and vending equipment, as well as parts, repair and refurbishing services. It operates offices in Illinois, Minnesota, Texas and Wisconsin.

The IAAPA presentation was also set to include Asteroids Recharged DX from Alan-1. Both products come from developers based in Utah.

Commercial distribution was announced for the first quarter of 2025. An MSRP had not been disclosed at the time of the announcement, and no Australian availability or pricing was provided.

The Kung Fu Panda Franchise

Inspired by traditional martial arts and set in ancient China, Kung Fu Panda follows Po, a food-loving fan of kung fu who becomes an unlikely hero. The first animated film, released in 2008, was nominated for an Academy Award and became DreamWorks’ highest-grossing original animated film.

Following the release of Kung Fu Panda 4, the film series had earned more than $2 billion at the global box office. The wider franchise also includes consumer products, video games, an Emmy Award-winning television series and attractions at Universal Destinations & Resorts theme parks.
