Sega Amusements has formally presented Alpha Ops VR Strike, a new motion-based arcade VR shooter announced for IAAPA Expo 2024. The game had previously appeared during location testing in the United States and United Kingdom, but the full reveal provides a clearer look at its cabinet, hardware and gameplay.
Sega has officially unveiled the release in full for IAAPA 2024, where it was scheduled to appear at Booth 1006 in the Orange County Convention Centre, Orlando, Florida, from 19 to 22 November.
The Alpha Ops VR Strike cabinet
Rather than repeating the freestanding design used by Sega’s earlier VR Agent, Alpha Ops VR Strike places players inside a cabinet styled like an armoured military vehicle. Its visual direction also recalls the older Target Bravo version of Operation Ghost.
The sit-down format uses motion seats and a responsive motion platform. Two vertically mounted 86-inch 4K screens face outward, giving spectators a direct view of the action while players use the VR system. This screen arrangement differs from some other VR shooters, which place landscape displays behind the players.

Audio comes from a 4.1 surround system, an unusual configuration between the more familiar 2.1 and 5.1 arrangements. LED lighting supports the cabinet’s military styling and is intended to make the machine highly visible on an arcade floor.

Sega has also retained one of the notable ideas associated with VR Agent: the headset and weapon are combined into a single hybrid controller. Players hold the unit up to their heads rather than securing a separate headset with straps, allowing them to move quickly into the game. The controller has been redesigned with a more comfortable-looking shape.

Three combat stages in Unreal Engine 5
Players take the role of soldiers in the Alpha Ops armoured vehicle, fighting through enemy attacks and surprise ambushes across three stages: Desert Gorge, Ice Blizzard and the Boss Stage.

The game is built with Unreal Engine 5, following several recent arcade projects that have adopted the technology for higher-end visuals. Examples mentioned alongside it include Triotech’s QUBE and Super Blaster simulators, while GoldStorm Pirates was also expected to use the engine. Alpha Ops VR Strike appears to be among the early arcade VR shooters to use Unreal Engine 5.

Gameplay footage from the Desert Gorge stage shows the vehicle moving through a desert battlefield while players engage enemies and respond to attacks. The footage was supplied from a United States location test and offers an early look at the game’s combat flow.
What the game could mean for arcade operators
Alpha Ops VR Strike continues Sega Amusements’ work with 3MindWave, which has also been involved with recent projects including Apex Rebels. Rather than simply following the approach of other prominent arcade VR releases such as Godzilla Kaiju Wars VR, the new game develops the hybrid controller concept introduced with VR Agent.
The sit-down motion format may give the game a different appeal from the stand-up design of VR Agent, which had already become a successful release for operators that acquired it. However, large deluxe VR machines are expensive, and the broader arcade and amusement-centre market faced challenging conditions during 2024.
For operators assessing a machine of this scale, factors such as floor space, attendant requirements and customer throughput will matter alongside the visual impact. Sega’s stated coin-operated, attendant-free setup is intended to make the game suitable for busy entertainment venues, although no test-earning figures were provided.
