SEGA Amusements International has started shipping Alpha Ops VR Strike, a sit-down virtual-reality arcade shooter built around motion, physical gun controls and three stages.

The release gives operators another substantial VR attraction to consider, following SEGA’s VR Agent from 2022. For more arcade-industry updates, visit the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.

From prototype to production

Alpha Ops VR Strike was first shown as a prototype at IAAPA 2024, after location testing in the United Kingdom and United States. It is SEGA Amusements International’s second major VR release and was developed with Hong Kong-based studio 3MindWave.

3MindWave has also worked with SEGA Amusements on titles including the ATV Slam and Apex Rebels racing games. The new release carries forward the hybrid gun-and-headset controller concept introduced with VR Agent, while placing it in a different style of arcade action.

The earlier game had a more traditional light-gun feel, whereas Alpha Ops VR Strike takes its cues from mounted-gun shooters and combines military science-fiction elements with a transforming vehicle.

The Alpha Ops VR Strike cabinet

Players sit on a motion platform inside a cabinet styled as a rugged military vehicle. The guns remain tethered to the machine, rather than being lowered when not in use, and the setup retains SEGA’s hybrid VR controller approach.

For spectators, the cabinet includes larger viewing screens than VR Agent. The display arrangement gives people waiting nearby a clearer look at the action, while additional LED lighting helps the machine stand out on a busy arcade floor.

Two large 65-inch 4K screens are built into the cabinet, with the VR experience supported by motion and a 4.1 surround-sound system. The design combines the vertically arranged screen format seen on some recent arcade machines with influences from earlier vehicle and gun-game cabinets, including Operation GHOST Target Bravo.

Operators comparing dedicated attractions with other arcade machines should note that this is a sizeable, venue-focused installation rather than a compact home unit.

Three-stage VR gun action

In the game, players join the elite Alpha Ops squad and travel through combat zones in an armoured transforming vehicle. The vehicle can convert into a mecha unit during the mission, changing the available firepower as players advance towards boss encounters.

The game runs on Unreal Engine 5 and includes three stages. The official description highlights enemy waves, ambushes and a boss battle, while the motion base, VR headset and hybrid controller are designed to keep aiming, looking and firing closely connected.

Official footage covers the game’s stages, beginning with Ice Blizzard. The second stage is Two (Desert Gorge), followed by Three (Boss Stage).

Pricing and reported locations

At IAAPA, the machine was quoted at approximately US$40,000. That placed it towards the more expensive end of arcade video games, although below the cost of larger VR attractions. The source material also noted that the price may have risen since that quotation; operators should confirm current terms with a SEGA Amusements distributor.

Alpha Ops VR Strike is an attendant-free, coin-operated attraction intended for commercial venues. Australian operators assessing a new installation can also consult RETROCADE’s Arcade Machine Buying Guide when comparing space, format and machine requirements.

Early locations reported for the game included at least one Timezone venue in Vietnam and Coral Island in Blackpool, United Kingdom. The source material did not identify a United States location at that stage.

SEGA’s official feature summary

Alpha Ops VR Strike places players in the front seat of an armoured vehicle alongside the Alpha Ops squad. The mission involves surviving enemy attacks, ambushes and a powerful boss across three stages.

SEGA Amusements International describes the game as a motion-based VR arcade release using Unreal Engine 5, its hybrid VR controller, a responsive motion platform and 4.1 surround sound. The cabinet combines military-vehicle styling, extensive LED lighting and two 65-inch 4K displays to attract both players and spectators.

For venues seeking a different kind of physical arcade experience, RETROCADE also covers specialised racing arcades and commercial machine formats.
