Spider-Man’s long-disputed continuity reset may be ending
Marvel’s controversial One More Day storyline could be heading towards a major reversal after nearly two decades. The 2007 story changed Peter Parker’s history by having him make a supernatural bargain with Mephisto, a decision that has remained part of Spider-Man continuity ever since.
The possibility of change appears in an unexpected place: Captain America #16. In the issue, Doctor Doom takes control of hell and declares every contract made with Mephisto null and void. That wording could affect Peter’s deal, although Marvel has not yet explained precisely what the consequence will be.
At minimum, the development could allow Peter and Mary Jane to remember the lives they had before Mephisto altered reality. It may also lead to a broader restoration of the history that was removed in One More Day.

What did One More Day change?
Peter made the bargain to save Aunt May, who was close to death. In return, Mephisto took Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage from reality. The change did not simply end their relationship; it rewrote important parts of Marvel’s shared history.
- Peter and Mary Jane were no longer married or together.
- Most people no longer remembered that Peter Parker was Spider-Man, despite that fact being revealed in Civil War.
- Harry Osborn was alive again.
- Aunt May survived.

Because this version of events has been in place for almost twenty years, undoing it would be a substantial continuity challenge. Marvel could restore the old timeline directly, give Peter and Mary Jane their memories back, or use a new reality-changing event to explain the transition.
Why the change could happen now
Captain America #16 includes a short scene in which Spider-Man senses that something is wrong and asks, “What’s — What’s happening?” Steve Rogers then explains that the world has changed because of actions connected to Doctor Doom’s new position.
The issue does not confirm that Peter’s bargain has been erased. However, writer Chip Zdarsky appears to be continuing this thread. Zdarsky is due to write the new mainline Avengers series, which includes Spider-Man, and its solicitations show the team facing Mephisto.

Marvel editor-in-chief Steve Wacker also teased a project titled “1 Day.” Its published logline reads: “This June . . . Tomorrow is one day away. Save the date . . . because no one is promised the future.” The project is reportedly planned for June 2027, but its connection to One More Day has not been confirmed.
For now, the evidence points to a possible shake-up rather than an announced retcon. If Marvel does make Mephisto’s contracts void, one of Spider-Man’s most debated status-quo changes could finally be revisited.
