James Gunn is set to address which parts of The Suicide Squad belong to the new DC Universe, with the answer arriving in a dedicated podcast special.
Since becoming co-head of DC Studios in 2022, Gunn has repeatedly fielded questions about how earlier films and current projects fit into the reworked DCU. The 2021 film remains one of the most debated cases because it was made before the new continuity officially existed.
The announcement will be particularly relevant to fans following the latest entertainment news, as the special promises a direct explanation rather than another round of speculation.
A dedicated podcast will examine The Suicide Squad’s canon
HBO Max has announced The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast. Gunn will host the one-off programme with DCU actors Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee.
The special is scheduled for release on 30 October. Australian viewers and listeners will be able to find it on HBO Max, the official DC and HBO YouTube channels, and major podcast platforms.
In the trailer, Gunn says audiences continue to ask the same question about The Suicide Squad: what is canon? The programme is intended to provide his definitive response.
The Suicide Squad arrived before the cinematic DCU existed. Since then, Peacemaker has received its own series and Weasel has appeared in Creature Commandos. The discussion will cover Harley, Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2, King Shark, Amanda Waller and other characters, alongside set stories, messages from members of the film’s cast and answers to fan questions.
What is James Gunn working on next?
Gunn is currently developing Man of Tomorrow, the follow-up to 2025’s Superman. The story will see Superman and Lex Luthor join forces against Brainiac, while several familiar DCU characters are expected to return.
Gunn has confirmed that the film’s assembly cut is complete. This is an early version of the edit, rather than the finished release cut.
A second season of Creature Commandos is also in development, although Gunn will not write it as he did the first season.
Writing has already begun on Gunn’s project after Man of Tomorrow, but its identity has not been revealed. Several other DC films and television series are on the broader slate, though most already have writers and directors attached.
