Kane Parsons has become one of the most closely watched young filmmakers in genre cinema after his breakout horror film Backrooms. A sequel is confirmed, but new comments have prompted speculation that his next major project could involve Valve’s Portal series.
Parsons has previously identified the Portal games as a key influence on Backrooms, particularly its clean, sterile spaces and unsettling corporate atmosphere. In a May interview with The New York Times, he described making a Portal film as a “dream”.
There is no official announcement linking Parsons to a Portal movie. However, a recent interview has given fans more clues to discuss.
Why fans think Kane Parsons could be working with Valve
In a recent clip shared by podcaster Kyle Buchanan, Parsons says he is developing “three dream projects”. He jokes that revealing more could result in people getting him “with their space lasers”.
Parsons also explains that the projects remain at an early stage and that he is still in an “information phase”. Adding to the speculation, he is wearing a Valve hoodie during the interview.

The clothing alone proves nothing, but it sits alongside several other details. Parsons’ Instagram stories indicate that he visited Valve at least twice in 2026: once in June and again in September. He has also teased a possible collaboration with the company and shared an Instagram image of a valve positioned to resemble Valve’s logo.

The major obstacle: Backrooms is not finished
Parsons has also made clear that he does not want to leave the Backrooms universe before its story reaches its conclusion. In the same interview, he said, “I don’t plan on dying in the next five years, so I don’t see a problem with taking a bit of time on it.”
His Backrooms sequel is being made for A24, but it does not yet have a release window. That commitment could make a separate feature project difficult to schedule, even if discussions with Valve are taking place.

What about the long-discussed Portal film?
There is another complication. J.J. Abrams’ proposed Portal movie was still described as actively in development for Warner Bros. in 2021. The project has not received a public update since then, so it may no longer be moving forward, although existing agreements could affect any future collaboration involving Valve and Parsons.
For now, the evidence points to interest and possible contact rather than a confirmed film. Parsons’ visits to Valve, his public enthusiasm for Portal and his comments about three dream projects make the theory plausible, but none of those details confirms that one of the projects is a movie based on the puzzle series.
The timing may nevertheless be favourable. A commercially and critically successful, auteur-led take on a game property could encourage more ambitious adaptations, following Zach Cregger’s successful approach to Resident Evil. A Parsons-directed Portal film remains unannounced, and fans may have to wait while his existing work develops.
If a Portal adaptation eventually arrives, its clinical test chambers and inventive puzzles would offer plenty of inspiration for interactive displays.
